Have they always been around , seems last few years they've become fairly common .. a bit scary if they eventually start being in in plague proportions
The other week fishing Geraldton inshore, there was a heap under the boat. Hooked up to one on an octo/sniper style jig, but got bitten off. 5 minutes later I see two of the barstards on the surface, looked like they were fighting or mating or something. Turns out they were linked together by my jig, one on each hook.
Nah..... I was at anchor, they were already a far distance away and heading down drift. Figured they would cut through the cords before I got to them. Probably should have tried in hindsight.
That did cross my mind at the time. My hate of the octo was probably what killed my motivation to go get it back. Think I only tied it on so I could stick the rod in the holder, let it dangle and have something to eat.
Bloody things, not in the river but got a couple landbased in rocko coupla months back. Lucky not to be bitten off using a small hook and light leader. Went pretty good on the 6lb. I thought I had a salmon! Few minutes later hooked another that had about 6 hooks in its gob and put up a weak fight.
Yeah we got one off the Jurien Bay jetty last week. Thought we were onto something big as the mackies have been running only to have a crap load of ppl come over to see what we had, to be a bloody NWer. But the normal blowies r so small up here. A mackie that was caught off the jetty last week had a baby blowie in its guts.

At least you've now finally
At least you've now finally hooked something on an Octosniper!
When asked by a non-fisherman 'how many fishing rods do you really need?' the correct answer is either:
n+1 (where n is the number of fishing rods you currently own); or
n-1 (where n is the number of fishing rods which would cause your significant other to dump you.
