LOL Go figure

I sat at Mindarie today for 3 hours and did all the right things. All I did was watch dolphins in the harbour and shags catching what I should have been catching. Maybe another day.........

give him some prawns, he'll

Sun, 2012-10-14 21:08

give him some prawns, he'll catch something every 5 seconds. I tried shelley bridge and then canning bridge and the yacht club next to it about 2 weeks back, caught nada (cept the occasional blowie).

Been trying to get onto the bream on lures thing myself with no luck, so your not the only one mate. see my post there were some good replies/tips in it

With bream very subtle

Mon, 2012-10-15 08:30

With bream very subtle changes can make all the difference. Flourocarbon leader is a must in my book & don't bother with anything over 8lb, there's no need for it. Personally I never use more than 4lb leader & I fish the nastiest snags I can find. Leader length can also make a difference if the fish are being really spooky, especially in shallow water. The minimum length would be two full rod lengths but you might need to go right up to 4 or even 5 rod lengths for your leader. The one that can make the most difference IME is the jig weights, use the lightest you can get away with for the conditions. You only need just enough weight to get to the bottom, you don't want it dropping like a stone, that looks unnatural if you use a lift & wind retrieve, which is what works most often on blackies. Make sure your tails are rigged straight, if they are not straight, you won't get fish, simple as that. Structure isn't only stuff like pylons, fallen trees etc so think outside the box a little. Structure is ANYTHING that sticks out from everything around it, so a clearing in a large area of weed or a single rock on an otherwise barren bottom is worth a cast or two. Water currents are also structure, if you find an eddy or little spot protected from the current, get a cast in there. Try slowing your retrieve down, if you think your going too slow, your not, there is no such thing as too slow for a bream retrieve. Sometimes you might need to pause the lure for 30 seconds or even more. Several times I've had sp's eaten while they have been sitting on the bottom for a few minutes while I attend to a second outfit. Use slow lifts, many new to bream luring make the mistake of lifting too quickly, that's a sure way to put the bream off your offering. Think about the area your fishing & what the bream are likely to be feeding on in that area. Think about your retrieve & try to make your lure imitate what you think the bream are feeding on at the time.

Forget going to Canning Bridge with sp's during the day. Sure you can get fish there but it's the worst spot for blowies in the entire system IMO. You will have to go through a lot of blowies & probably alot of tails before you get a bream there during daylight hours. If you want to fish there, go when it's dark or use hardbodies. Vibes are king under the bridge & if you hop them back against the current you can work them really slowly through each area.

Hope that helps you a little.

Cut

Mon, 2012-10-15 10:26

Drove to mandurah yesterday. Fished the cut with my son and son in law. My son caought 2 herring and 50cm salmon. My son in law caught 2 400ish skippy. Me i caught 2 blowies. Same rigs, same bait and i barely got a bite all day but thats fishing isn't it. I bought a sign while i was in the states recently it says-theres a fine line between fishing and sitting there looking stupid-and i reckon that sums it perfectly.
