mulloway and sharks, (landbased)

hey all, can anyone give me some advice on fishing for mullas and sharks from shore, mainly rigs that are able to keep the bait of the bottom away from the  annoying rays and  such, i know there are a few different ones, but wht would be the best??  and also wht moons and tides to fish on, ive heard around a full moon and couple of hours either side of a high tide can be productive.

any helpful advice is much appreciated cheers. :D

if it helps, all the sharks

Mon, 2010-07-26 15:49

if it helps, all the sharks ive hooked, and the mulloway Diehard got, were all on bottom rigs, with 4oz sinkers. even if you do have the bait off the bottom, a ray will still come up to grab it. i have known of a ray caught on a ballooned bait. another rig that has worked a lot is about a metre and a half of 60-80lb fluro/mono, with 2 snelled 7/0 gama circles. a running sinker on the leader, size depends on the current and depth.

Different people say

Mon, 2010-07-26 16:06

Different people say different things about catching mulloway - there is certainly a BIG element of luck involved, especially in the metro area.

Fishing either side of a high tide is a good move in my opinion. I like a running sinker rig for mulloway as they can be a shy / tentative fish. Especially those big old fellas who have got smart with age :-)

Try to present a fresh bait. You can go with gang hooks or snelled circle hooks if you prefer. Most fish baits are worth a try - but if you can't get a fresh bait I would recommend a scaly mackerel available from most bait stockists.

Location is important - marinas and rock walls are popular spots but fishing around the edges of promising looking gutters is worthwhile.

Good luck.

i personally believe snelled

i personally believe snelled circles are better, especially if your leaving a big bait soaking in the water. means they will hook themselves easier.

Mon, 2010-07-26 16:40

it really depends on where you are fishing i have noticed that in the surf mulloway hit with as much gusto as any tailor so you stranded surf paternoster will work with a fresh fillet of anything you are catching locally but for calmer water a bit more finesse is needed smaller sinker and better bait presentation

As Leemo said about the rays...

Really trial and error like i have done changing rigs and baits now i have finally found one that works after a bit of time.

to try minimise a stingray use a bottom rig but make the leader about 1.2-1.5m and put a cork about 20cm from the hooks.

Well...

Mon, 2010-07-26 21:50

Just to really mess with everyone's theories...DieHard your monster at Hillaries last month was caught right in the middle of the cycle - half way between a full moon and a new moon.

To confuse things even more, it was caught in broad daylight, despite most big mulloway being caught at night (because of the generally shy nature of the fish) AND on a receding tide.

Just goes to show - if you have a line in the water, you're a chance.

Like I said....you need one hell of a lot of luck.

Heres some useless information but it could come in handy

Tue, 2010-07-27 06:19

Sharks are territorial and will either hold (keep there current territory)or move (look for a better area) from one area to another over the full moon.  Where there is a single shark in one area, if caught, the area will remain empty until the next moon.

Im no bio either i just targeted sharks for quiet a few years and kept a seasonal daily log. My records on the full moon definately indicated the most activity.

I think there would be exceptions too. Sharks like whites, blues, makos could be migrational and constantly on the move.

Also too if there is a large food source like a dead whale boundries could be crossed.

My best on the full moon was 17 whalers from 17 hooks set.

plus im all ears and stand to be corrected

anyways

we have done best on sharks on a full moon also. at hillaries one night, flangies had a big run from a shark but bit him off. we had another run about an hour later and managed an 8kg whaler. plenty of squid around that night too. also got a wobby and a couple of rays.

We hooked 15 mullas on a full moon one night, all on lures.  Maybe try lures on the full moon when the fish have a decent amount of moonlight for vision.

Yeah, Murray mouth in

Thu, 2010-07-29 13:00

Yeah, Murray mouth in SA.

The tide was going out very fast, and in the moonlight you could visualise where the surf met the current ripping through the mouth.  The fish were all along this section where the two waters met.

We only landed 4 fish up to 40 pounds, but got blown away by about a dozen.  It was the most amazing fishing, standing on the beach in the moonlight and hooking these big fish.  ABU 7000s with 10kg line were not really big enough to land the big ones.  We lost all of our big SP's then lost our big Halco Pilchard? chromies.  In the end we were using small salmon slices, but the hooks were not strong enough to land a fish.

Heres a theory for yaz!

Fri, 2010-07-30 01:27

gotta ask yourself what is it about the full moon rumour, that its the best time to target mulloway
could be:
the higher tide tends to bring them closer to shore
they may be able to see better in the water
heres an interesting one, as the moon pulls a bigger tide what effect does the moon have on the fish not only to the surrounding ocean it lives in but to the actual fish itself, i once got told that the full moon makes their stomache bigger therefore the fish becomes more hungry hmmm :S

but definately having a bait in the water would be your best chance.!

use too do a bit of work experience in freo at tafe's fish facility where they had a 22 and a 24 kg mulloway in a 30 000 litre concrete tank and use too feed them different food items such as mulies and squid and watched them feed, gave me a real insight as to how they take a bait,

as for sharks nothin like a nice live tailor on he bottom or a smelly mackeral under a balloon can doo....

Also heard about the full moon pulling a tide... aswell as humans go there was that News Report of people going crazy on a Full moon because they thought the Full moon would change the position of their brain liquid, so the same can go for a fish....?

Mate Mulloway are a personal

Tue, 2010-08-03 15:28

Mate

Mulloway are a personal thing in every aspect when targeting them. I agree with all comments from everyone. its just trial and error. i find when surf fishing look for gutters close to shore that get covered by white wash when a wave breaks. fish on the side of a gutter and soak a fresh fillet of wat ever is being caught in the area. herring and tailor are the best. with rigs i personally prefer the standard paranoster rig with two snelled gamagatsu hooks size pending on where ya fishing. fish with 40lb - 60lb mono leader with braided line so ya can feel the bigger ones pick the bait up and play with it. Big tip, when they grab it let them run for a while before striking, last thing ya wanna do is pull the bait from its mouth.

good luck man
