Most sounders will display
Most sounders will display their supply voltage so if you get the book out and set it up you will know if it is a voltage problem.

DhueyJ, what brand is it? My new Raymarine Dragonfly is doing the same, Im still unsure if its the voltage drop or error in the unit. Ive spoken to Raymarine, seems they will simply replace it if faulty. But I need to find out first if its a voltage drop. It shuts off then restarts itself after some time ...not cool !!!

My Dragonfly was shutting
My Dragonfly was shutting down every time I started the motor. Was a real pain in the a.. The previous sounder that was in there didn't do it. Worked out it was the old battery I had. Voltage would drop below the operating range of the Dragonfly. The old sounder had a lower min operating voltage so wouldn't bother it.
Installed a new battery and is all good now.

Not a hummingbird is it ?..
Not a hummingbird is it ?.. mines a bit a pedantic when cranking the engine turning itself off when the voltage drops ( common fault on these units ) .. yet my other 1Kw sounder on same boat doesn’t flinch . PITA so when possible I’ll top the batteries right up prior to going out and it’s fine , I presume a solar trickle charger would fix my issue .. not sure if it’s yours though

I had to get a larger battery as my hummingbird used to disconnect when I cranked the out board due to voltage drop

Boys, it went to Taylors, its a furuno
Is the volt drop when cranking the motor? What other electrical devices do you run? Is it dual battery? Starting and a house battery? Or does it drop out when heading into chop or over swell?

Same with Lowrance
I had the same issue with an older Lowrance sounder and overcame it by setting up a separate that allowed me to select which battery I was running the sounder and GPS off, then always ran them off the non-starting battery.

was a marine sparky
worked for Rio Tinto / Hammersly Iron in the marine dept as a marine sparky for years like to think I can hold my own in what is a specialized area . Retired now but working on marine is a very different kettle of fish to working as a sparky on shore

johnny take number 2
take number 2 battery down to battery world and get a load test done on it then you will know whether its on its way out, but make sure you watch them test it or they might scam you

Upgrade your cabling from the battery, wrong size cable is generally the main issue for any voltage drop. I use to run a heavy cable from my batteries to a power block and then fed my bits and pieces from that with short heavy wires.

Check the operating voltage
Check the operating voltage of both units. The Furuno may be lower than the other so volt drop may cause it to drop out but not the other. As above happened to me with my Dragonfly.

volt drop
sounds very much like volt drop is your problem as the others have said , i guess you dont have the problem if your motor is running when trialling the problem which proves it volt drop , buy a cheap gauge or borrow a volt meter and test the voltage right at the sounder connection point, you can have great batteries but it needs large cables running right up to the dash behind the unit , some sounder drop out easier than other due to the factory preset levels to save your sounder , cheaper units dont care and will keep running, it could also be a faulty lead or bad connection somewhere in the cabling as well ,
