Just for Info
Went out for a gander and a cruise but since the season for crabs is open dropped some exploration pots. 1 Monster keeper at 15mm over legal, nil other so latter released to scare another crabber. But OMG was there a lot of babies. Some pots had up to 4 little one fighting for a feed. Also slow trolling Smiling jacks lures in the middle of the day got 4 juvenile Tailor just under size. 2 x 10 strings our count was 42 crabs as we keep a log. LOL 41 unders but looking good for when they graduate to high school.
Cheers

A hot time in crab land.
yep , hoping for some decent warm days between now and xmas , as it was not that warm this time last year if anyone remembers. ( heat needed for crab growth)
And on top of that we had the 2 rain events in end of Jan and Feb think it was.
That really killed it for the real crab men , the scoopers!!!!.
I dont even lubricate the fighting gear until late Dec , as I am over logical , and see no point in scooping crabs I cant keep.
Cheers for the early report , good to hear babys around , and also what sorta depth were you trolling? .

Hi Quad
As shallow as possible right on the edges of deeper water. So aiming for about 1.5m. Has to be in the cut, Z bend or main river as this concentrates the fish. No point in the proper Estuary IMO.

Cheers .
Thought that might be the case , have trolled for decent sized tailor in the swan before , down from the old Majestic hotel , I think it was called, many many moons ago.
Gee theres a flash back for ya , 1980,s fibreglass derban runabout . three stripe jonno 70 2 stroke , nilsmaster invisibles , no gps , stubbies shorts , pulling
the rig with my 1977 lx torana,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,, gee im old haha.
As the owner of a new rig , just want to get back into some of the fun stuff we used too do , but this time with my girls , crabbing at mandurah , squidn at cockburn ,
trolling for pike and herring , theres more than just dhies and pinkies out there , and our old derban was champangne fishing on a beer budget .
We had it anywhere from Albany to Mackeral islands , up rivers , 10kms out to sea , breaming at moore river etc etc, bought it for 7k , had it 10 years , sold for 6k,

Us gray heads showing our age
hey. Clearly remember getting into Narrow Neck at Rotto using triangulation to get the entry point, and using this to get our favourite cray dive spot. Cant remember how to do that now - must be an age thing - LOL

Went for a scoop today, didn't expect anything but wanted to have a look. Got bugger all, 1 that was probably just size and a dozen undersized blueys. Had a Look on both the east and the west side of the estuary

I went to Roberts Bay for a scoop on Monday. Most crabs I've ever seen scooping, but the only one I bothered to catch and gauge was 10-15mm undersize. Went to South Yunderup on Tuesday night to throw out a couple of fillets for a few hours hoping for a bull shark and threw 4 nets in from the jetty I was fishing off. Didn't keep count but would've caught about 50 or 60 crabs over 4 hours, biggest was a bit better at around 5mm undersized

Went netting last night and thousands of little ones. Most I have seen this time of year for a long time. Looks like it is going to be a cracker of a year.

Yip
I suspect it is going to be a good one. Living on the canals I haven't seen anything like this previously (been here 2 seasons). Last year was a good one anyway and there is a load more small crabs in the canal than last year.
Hears hoping.
Crab sandwich - Yum.
