lowrance , they have superb back up service I have a humginbird these days but my past experience with lowrance has been if you have a faulty bit of gear they just give you a new one if it is still under warranty and when the warranty expirers they will service exchange for 50 dollars if you have dramas when I up north it was only 5 days turn around in saying that if your unit is new you shouldn't be having dramas and they should sort it pronto

Sure it's not a wiring issue? Sounds like something loose? I have a HDS9 and it's performed faultlesly. Hope you get it sorted one way or the other.

yeah, once i had mine "black out".  then just realised i hadn't screwed in the connection properly when I put it on the boat.  gave me a brief "oh shit" moment.  but i always have a back up GPS, one of those hand help garmin battery jobbies.  doesnt have maps, but i have waypoints in it etc to get me home.

definitely worth having one for only a hundred bucks or so.

I had the same with HDS10 Gen1

Tue, 2013-06-18 20:12

At 6mths old. Did lots of testing. Took unit and evidence to place of purchase. Replaced. Great till that unit did the same on first trip. Replaced again. After my 4th unit (original and 3 replacements), I asked for a Gen 2. No probs since. Can't knock the Lowrance backup service but really question the quality. Also a pain not having the unit while it goes over east and back.

HDS12 GEN 2

Tue, 2013-06-18 22:00

 Just had mine replaced.

Bottom corners of the touch screen were discolouring after it had been on for 5 plus hrs.

3 day turn around, so great back up.

Out of interest prego what transducer are you running? and where is it mounted. have the M260 in a Haines 602F, its mounted inside the starboard side of the bilge area, just on the dead rise, I am going to look at testing on the flat of the planc area as anything over 15kns is a disapointment.

Thanks for any info you can offer on this.

The unit is easy to use and a few small changes to sensitivity is all I have found is required.

The chart plotter part is very good and provides a tight zoom to get back on your marks.

Cheers,

Jeff

Thu, 2013-06-20 06:39

I have had my HDS10 Gen1 for 3 years and it has been impressive. Some minor glitches I have encountered are...

1) On some occasions the sounder will say I'm in 0.4m of water when in fact I'm in 75m. To fix this I simply change the fishing mode from shallow water to deep water and it instantly fixes itself. I then change it back to shallow water and continue on.

2) Since the last time I downloaded the software updates on the SD card my sounder updates itself every time I turn it on which takes about 3 - 4 mins (Pain in the arse). Has anyone experienced this before? Maybe I've copied a file in the wrong spot on the card?

Other than that it works really well and I strongly suggest getting the sonic hub sound system. It kicks some serious arse! :-)

Cheers mate I will give it a crack. Is this something you know for sure or is it a suggestion? If you know exactly what it is what is the file extension for the update files?

Cheers

 Hey Reevesie

My HDS had the same problem. Its happened a couple of times. The screen goes so dim that you can just see the images. Power down power up no problems until the next time. It doesnt happen often but its a concern.

I sent a note to Lowrance who suggested either a) a software glitch or b) a hardware failure. They suggested a restart back to factory options (but save my waypoints first). If that didnt work then return for a rebuilt unit. Ill try the restart first as it doesnt happen too often so thinking that its not hardware.

Time wil tell.

cheers
