Hey Paul, seems like your about as good catching KG's as me.......I have absolutely no clue on KG's.................................butterfish, wrasee, sandies, goatfish.....you name it.......except KG's........ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh
when i was back there growing up, over in perth - nada. And from what ive seen on fishwrecked guys catch them while fishing lumps for dhuies???? Id expect them to be on the weed beds near hillaries etc - similar sort of bottom is where we caught them in SA one after the other, but nada - plenty of sand whiting though...
I caught ny PB KG just off Hillaries Kane. But you're right have had more luck with them as a by catch for Dhuies. Top hook 7/0 just for that reason but the big ones will get a 9/0 down there gob anyway.
As stated- occationally catch them when bottom fishing , not what i`d call in targetable numbers ! in fact i could probaly count how many i`ve caught over 20yrs on two hands.
Kgs off jurien are very few and far between. I have fished up there for years with our fishing club and many state championships up there and I have seen only a hand full caught..
I dont burley at all and find that they will be next to lumps.
More often than not i get them when the sounder is not lit up so thats what I aim for. I look for the mark on the gps , make sure its not lit up on the sounder and usually get a couple!
I tend to get them when we have drifted away from the lumps were the dhuis and snapper sit. they sit on the edges off lumps on flat ground usually / sand bars. we have caught a few but you have to be patient coz you get alot off wrasse and shit fish too. We use 1/0 or 2/0 hooks with lil bit off squid and it works a treat. Make sure you are on the bottom too
Plenty of sandies from jurien and some decent size ones too. kg's metro we have found they like flat broken ground with a bit of sand around amongst the weed and reefy areas. around the 30 to 40 mtrs were more productive with some 1kg plus. generally smaller ones in shallower waters
