Killing billfish

Reported this to fisheries, they did some investigating and found there were a number of people on board with current WA recreational fishing licenses.

Would be interesting to see how many fish they have in their freezer!

If someone on the vessel holds a WA rec license, they are allowed one possession limit for that person.  If 15 people hold a WA rec license.......??????  They may have 10 tonnes of fish on board.  Who knows?

If 15 had wa licenses on the vessel surely boat limits then apply. Not tons as you quote. If a launch has 10 people on board AMD there was one person fusing you.would not.have repeated.your so called call to the fisheries. I think you had another.agenda and it appears it failed

Those ore ships have it down to an art but if they have fishing licences on board they are doing nothing illegal.

I have heard reports of 14 sails stacked up in the freezer and it all gets eaten.

They had a flying gaff.  We watched them for about 5 minutes trying to gaff it.  The saily kept avoiding it and at one stage looked like it was going to earn it's freedom as it got the line wrapped around the ship's rudder.  We were cheering on the fish, but eventually it was all over

Fisheries put it in the "to hard basket" in some ways it's legal but in other ways its illegal and evan if fisheries fines them, the person doesnt live in aus and its impossible to enforce it. In my eyes it's wrong but a in a kids eyes who lives in Perth it acceptable. It's a hard one. I know how I deal with it (I won't say) lol

A few months ago there was a bitch session on a Karratha facebook page. One person who worked at the Port said he was told by a ship worker that they sell the fish when they return to Phillipines. ???? Is that legal?

A work mate was on one of these ships when he noticed they were hauling up undersized fish. When he confronted them they lost the ability to speak English. I wonder how well that would work with fisheries next time at the boat ramp lol

I've seen them release fish. Surprised me but shows that even sails taste better than trevally.

Mate of mine who works on

Fri, 2013-03-29 21:33

Mate of mine who works on rigs/boats up north fishes regularly off the platform. Does very well for himself too. They hand the catch over to the kitchen and the chef cooks for the blokes for tea.

He's got a license and so isnt doing anything wrong. Christ knows if I were stuck on a boat for weeks on end I'd be wetting a line at the first chance I got.

Lots of different view points

Lots of different view points here.

If they were taking it home to sell then I reckon thats wrong but if they are going to eat it then that is fine with me. Yes I would rather they C&R but if they are not wasting it then fine.

I have heard that as they are a comercial ship they can not actually recreationaly fish from them or something to do with their permits to be in Australian waters but I am unsure of the regs.

Either way eveytime I go out there I get nothing.

Cheers Nath

Yeah, although it hurts to see these beautiful fish being killed, they are quite plentiful.  If they are just taking a couple for their meals, I am not too bothered by it.  If they are filling their freezers to take home / sell when they next reach port, I reckon it is wrong!

Slow trip to China

Sun, 2013-03-31 13:44

Cape Leonidas, fairly new, built 2010 lenght 292 mts. About 12 hours ago pumping at 6.5 knots 200ks north of Karratha steering 365.

Projected to hit 7.2 knots in another 50ks and reach Qingdao, China on the 15-4-2013. Max speed 11, average 9, I would have guessed a bit more than that.

Would the captain let you drag a couple of lures on a heavy cord out the back, or are you ment to polish the ship or polish something else.
