Sounds like a great trip, definately on the "to-do list"

And it'll only cost you $1.79 to get there and back in your rig !

Im planning

Tue, 2011-12-06 20:29

to go anytime after the 16th that the weather plays the game, stay in touch on here. Been meaning to ask fisheries about the off season notification when they are closed over xmas-probably just put one in for the whole period.

Boat size

Tue, 2011-12-20 09:28

Talking of doing an abrolos trip , whats the minimum size boat you guys would do it in . I have a baron sportsman (5.9m) that is finally gettin a 115 4 stroke yammy ,so now fuel wont be an issue I am startin to think of an abrolos trip . What are your opinions .

pick your weather

Tue, 2011-12-20 15:04

Lots of guys do it in 5-6 meter boats.

Weather is the big factor, pick a nice stretch because at the southern group at least, good shelter can be problematic. Its easy to find shelter from a given direction but harder to find places to get shelter over a wider range. Such as E to SW.

Its definitely not fun there when its blowing. A piss easy 90 minute trip in calm weather can become an ordeal and stressful in 20 knots and 2M. Having said that a SW'er is almost down wind from Southern Group to Gero.

If your boat uses similar to mine (115 4s yam) then probably 120 litres is absolute minimum to carry. I used 110 or so for 3 days but covered all of the SG exploring and fishing, 100+ Nmiles total.

thats awefully ecconomical, is it ally, if so i would recommend half the fuel again at the very least in a fibreglass hull loaded etc.

not unusual?

for a 115 4 stroke about 1nm per litre? its a trailcraft so shallow v and not too heavy.

Its about 30 miles to the east side of the southerngroup, from there-how long is a piece of string!
