Using a squid rod

Hi all,
I have been catching squid for 30 years with pencil jags and prawn lures (can still remember when yo-zuri brought out the first prawn pattern) but always with handlines.
On a whim I bought a Hearty Rise Egi Force 8'3" a couple of days ago. Didn't ask but at the price and by the feel and the weight it's graphite. How do you lift a squid with these things without high sticking it and snapping the tip? I can see myself at the Mole pulling a squid up and with the rod bent the thing will still be 4 1/2 feet away and low. Surely this can't be a 2 man operation?
How's it done?

Those egi rods are built
Those egi rods are built specifically to take the strain in the tip. you can high stick them with confidence of them not snapping.

Not knocking
anybody using rods for squiding, but we use a hand line with the squid jig, get heaps of squid. I have watched people using a rod and JMHO find it quite comical the way they use the rod, to me feels, looks like its very awkward. Or is it because I use a hand line other people might think its awkward.

Handlines for squid
Roberta,
I actually agree. I have fished the busselton jetty since I was 3 and started squidding at 10. I can control a squid jig very well with a handline, get a good cast and have pulled monsters up onto the jetty (ie 10cm of hood sticking out of the top of a 20l bucket) and I admit the rod thing seems odd to me. The squid seem to be getting a bit smaller these days but in any case, I want to try this out. Have a Stella 1000 with 0.6 egi braid on it looking for something to do.

Never deadlift (unsupported)
Never deadlift (unsupported) a squid over say 500 grams. Either net it or squirrel grip it (around the neck) once it is at the surface of the water. You can use a squid gaff but I can't justify buying one when I've never needed one. I'm sure you would need one for say busso jetty with the big ones. I have lifted squid up to 980g with the egi force but when I look back on it, it was a stupid decision and I could have snapped it.
Roberta when we go squidding off the boat we use both, we land more squid with the rods due to the action we are putting out and the soft taper of the rod which allows even the smallest of squid to stay connected. Having said that though I prefer the lifting power of a handline from a jetty. If you are fishing landbased it is almost essential to be using a rod to cover more ground. You will get a few on handling, but if you are serious about getting squid, a squid rod is a great addition. With the cheapest Egi rods being around $60 it doesn't hurt the bank as much as it used to.
