It's interesting.

Can't say I would have posed in knee deep water, a self preservation thing I guess. I'm surprised that such a big shark would be caught in a net for so long. Wonder if it was even 10yr old.

Pros or amateurs

Thu, 2013-04-18 18:26

Were they pro fishermen or amateurs?
Sounds like the net was a stopper, used to stop schools of salmon from travelling further during the night so they school up and wait until a beach seine net is run around them.

On GWN news it says the shark was cut up and turned in to fertiliser, no mention of where the fins and jaws went.

Sorry, but I dont agree with

Thu, 2013-04-18 18:51

Sorry, but I dont agree with salmon pro netting killing whole schools basically for catfood, and even more so the net left in overnight to kill sharks.....

Hard for the pro's who rely on this for their livelihood and no one wants to see hard working people out of pocket, would require government buyout so the pros are reasonably compensated. Not an easy issue, but I would be prepared to pay two or three times as much for my fishing liscence to stop this stuff and improve gthe catch and release salmon fishery.

Cat food?

Thu, 2013-04-18 22:05

They have the cannery at Albany that does them for human consumption and usually whats left or not cold enough when it reaches the cannery gets frozen and done in to cutlets for cray bait.
We mostly did ours for cray bait because after you work out the cost of ice, transport of the fish in crates to Albany and then the return of the crates back to Dunsborough there was bugger all profit in it.

If they are just meshing them then they will be going for cray bait because they go off pretty quickly if left in the net for too long. [Bastards of things to unmesh because of their deep gill covers.

nah theres isnt a cannery in Albany anymore. i heard that any salmon being brought in are just for cray bait... not even a market for cat food.
