Yep no worries. I run a furuno 620 with a 1kw tm260 and it picks up bottom just as well as a furuno 585 (ive got both on 2 seperate boats) . Have used it out to 300m chasing rubies and its fine. Was told by a fella who used to work for Taylors marine that the 620 has exactly the same output as a 585 despite what the box says.
Sorry your right after a bit of research I stand corrected. Where bought my fcv620 from I was told I could only use the 600. Shows how much they know hey!! Not metioning names.
I runa 1kW on a 587 and dont go over a gain of 4 even in 300 plus m, which is essentially 400W, so cant see any reason why the 600 W 620 would not be fine. Certainly can plug it in and it will work, and you will get much better results than say a 1kW 587 with a 600 W transducer......transducer more important than head unit.
It's a rough estimation, as you said, not correct but a rough guide.
0 gain is interesting. Obviously the unit must start at a certain power limit, not 0 W, if your getting a reading. I have not tried it.
Assume 0 grain is equal to 20 percent of total power, equals 200w On a 1 kw unit, then 4 out of 10 grain would be 520 W, still under the max 600W gain achievable with a fcv620.
For the new Furuno's, you are correct, as full power is used all the time I think and gain can be retrospectively chnaged, which as you said appears to be for all intents and purposes sensitivity.
Still, for the arguement of a 600W vs 1000W sounder, the same principal applies.....I think????
Interesting reading I run a tm260 in a wetbox and trying to get out for some deep drops, guess I will just plug it in and go have a look, thanks for the help lads.
Pull the black plug out of the top of the box and make sure it is full of water /salt water any air will give you bubbles and interfere with the picture. I have the 587 with the tm260 and we fish out to 360+,But you need to go slow

opinons vary
I believe you can, just the unit has a 600w output but will still receive a better pic as the element is better on the 1kw.
edit - ant says it all
Reverse cycle a/c supply and install - Ducted and wall splits

No the feeling gaz, been told both u can and u can't, managed to get a 620 for a steal but no good to me if I can't use!
Do I just cut my losses and go the 585??!
cheers for the feedback fellas!

dont know were you got that from john
gain of 4 is 400w on a 1 kw transducer never heard that before , i run 2 kw and quite often have 0 gain does that meen im at 0 watts ,dont tink so

I could be completely wrong
I could be completely wrong but im pretty sure gain has very little to no affect on power, the gain is adjusting the sensitivity.

This what I think
The gain or sensitivity knob controls the signal power output of the unit
