Five fathom advice
Submitted by joycey on Sun, 2019-10-06 16:16
Hi all
With the new closure areas stopping me from fishing my normal inshore spots, I plan to try the western side of the five fathom bank behind garden island before the demersal ban kicks in.
Not done much fishing in this area. Am I best to drift or anchor and burley?
Cheers for any advice

If really early......anchor and berley
if you go over FFB travel about 1 km, you will see the bottom drops to around 25 metres before a second line of reef appears on the sounder, if an easterly blowing try and anchor hanging back toward this deeper reef ......dhuies and snapper together with large KGW all inhabit this area. You would be surprised just how large as well

I use a sarca sand anchor
As mentioned anchor and fish back to the deeper reef, provided you are in the deeper water swell should not be an issue Don't anchor on the reef you want your berley to be drifting back toward the reef to draw fish to you

Just remember to keep
Along length of anchor rope out if you anchor, the swell can jump up pretty high when in comes over the bank, and anchoring and burling I think produces the best results just IMO

Night time
At night I always anchor and burley on the back edge. It can be hit and miss though. If they're there then expect Pinkies with the odd Dhu by-catch.
Day time might be different though.
