Fish Ratings
Submitted by Scott Family on Wed, 2013-06-12 21:10
Just wondering if some people can let us know from their experience as to the taste and rating of the following fish: Grass Emperor ( Bluelined Emperor, Black Snapper) and the Stripey Snapper ( stripey seapearch, Spanish Flag).
Thanks in advance for any responses.

+1 on the spanish flag
Beautiful white firm flesh, but since I was told that they take a long time to mature (1 of the slowest growing fish in the sea) i always put them back.
I figure if they have lived long enough to get to decent size eating, i'll give the old buggers a 2nd chance :-)

Yep, very slow growing. It is sad that so many people use them for bait.

I don't know who told you
I don't know who told you this, but it isn't entirely true.
Sure, they are slower growing then many pelagic species (as most demersals are) and they are even slower growing than some other Lutjanidae (tropical snappers), but they only live to about 20 years and grow quite rapidly in the first 3-5 years of life.
Many other commonly caught rec species are far slower growing and longer living.
The sea sweep (Scorpis aequipinnis) for example matures at about 14-16 years of age and can live for 68 years. The foxfish (Bodianus frenchii) grows to only a maximum length of around 46cm, however these fish have been recorded as old as 78 years.
Then you've got the orange roughy on the south coast, which is in a whole differnt league. It has been recorded up to 149 years of age.

Flag hands down the biggest
Flag hands down the biggest they get is like 50 cm though so better off letting them go and eating a blackie instead if you have the choice
