Sand Bass
Being unable to see all of the dorsal fin shape to get a full description, my guess is a sand bass

Definitely not a sand bass.
Definitely not a sand bass. This is a sand bass www.scuba-equipment-usa.com/marine/APR06/Sand_Bass(Psammoperca_waigiensis).html
My guess would be goldspotted sweetlip. And they do get darker colouration like that.

Wrong sand bass
Take a look at sand bass in Sea Fishes of Southern Australia by Barry Hutchins and Roger Swainston , the one you have linked to has no resemblance

here is one for Glenn.. bit
here is one for Glenn.. bit hard to tell in this pic with the angle but looking at the pic i dont think its a sand basse or a gold spot. looks to be the wrong shape for gold spoot as they tend to be higher in the body comparing to the length of the body.

Don't have it on me
Don't have it on me canarvonite but I don't doubt it. That's the problem with using vernacular. Scientific names don't lie.
I always grew up calling the fish I linked to, sand bass. They're in fishwreckapedia.

Goldspotted Sweetlips
This fish looks quite odd in the photo, but this is a Goldspotted Sweetlip Plectorhinchus flavomaculatus. The really spotted fins are a giveaway for me.
also: The fish in the link is a Sand Bass Psammoperca waigensis, but a young one. Ignore the colour and patterns and you'll se it is the same shape as the one illustrated in Southern Sea Fishes.
