FAD program

Interesting article in today’s West Australian for anyone who fishes or has been thinking about fishing the FADs off Perth.

Not looking good

Sun, 2019-07-07 10:33

Would people be open to paying for additional license to use to fund?

I would... but don't know this would cut it.

Or could better communication sort the maintenance ?

Perhaps there's a need for New ideas and management strategies within the Game fishing Club to generate sponsorship and New members? Not having a crack at the game fishing club as im sure there plenty of members that enjoy it.

Im not a member but fished the FAD's twice last summer, Some would say i shoud pay the membership fee but thats not good value in my book. Perhaps they can look at a cheaper membership for guys that are willing to contribute but dont want to pay a membership of $120 to fish a FAD twice a year.

There's a pretty big population of fisho's in perth and im sure if the PGFC opend its doors and ran some other smaller comps/ Days out, Community projects and the like they could entice a few more members to their ranks. Alot of the problems smaller clubs face i believe are due to the fact they are reluctant to change with the times.

Just my 2 Cents.

Have you seen how many open days and family comps they currently run? Plus information nights with guest speakers and sponsor promotions.

My point exactly Dodgy i havnt seen bugger all about what they get up to, dont take my post the wrong way just because ive not seen it dosent mean its not happening but perhaps they could look at broadening their audience.

By the way Im not bagging PGFC just suggesting if they are struggling then look further afield to support the cash flow as theres alot of fisho's in perth that would support good causes.

Again Just my opinion.

Cheers

Struggling

Fri, 2019-07-12 18:43

Its wont be so much that the club itself is struggling but they are spending a lot of money that could go on members on a community resource instead.

Thats where the commentary about ensuring the program is supported by govt and maybe license money to continue what they have done for so long.

Its hard to rely on the public as many, like you have stated above, are happy to use them but dont necessarily want to financially contribute.

In regard to comments about gamefishing clubs it can be hard to attract new members as the rules surrounding gamefishing are very strict and arent for everyone.

All of this has been discussed and reviewed for a number of years. Problem is you cant be everything to everyone and if you try you satisfy noone

I stated above I used the FADS but didn’t state I wasn’t willing to contribute just that it’s hardly good value to pay a $120 yearly fee to use it twice.

im also very aware of the rules surrounding gamefishing comps/ regulations and yes a small group enjoys that for sure hence why I suggested  the club could look outside the box broaden its horizons, But anyways just my opinion.

perhaps the only way it will be sorted is to lose the FADs and let the govnerment fund them but I’m guessing fat chance with that.

Good points

 You make some good points.

PGFC itself is healthy in terms of membership and financial status.  Having said that we would always welcome additional members.

The main conundrum the club is facing with respect to the FADs is that they've evolved from being a fishing resource that was, in a practical sense, only available to a few people to now being what is essentially a public/community resource.  There are probably two things that have contributed to that change in the last 20 odd years - the advent of GPS chartplotting to pinpoint things like FADs in distant offshore locations, and the ability of trailerboats to now easily and safely reach and fish 30-40 Nm offshore.

Added to the complexity of the issue is that costs have escalated hugely in the last few years.

The big questions are how do we share costs to a larger community and how do we manage equitable access to anglers and spearfishers.

Good to hear the Club has a strong membership and finincal status a credit to the powers that be running a succesful club.

Have you guys approached the Fisheries or gonverment bodies about taking on the costs? Over east or specifically in NSW the FAD program is run buy the DPI fisheries.

Im pretty sure the users of the fads would be up for contributing to costs if there was way rather then yearly membership i know i would.

Should be funded from our license fees

Fri, 2019-07-12 19:21

But how about spearo's also contributing as they regularly " lock out" fisho's from getting close due to dive flag regulations

Agree, should be funded from license fees

The likelihood of non PGFC fishos and the spearos contributing won't happen until the PGFC program ceases.
