Cockburn Sound help
Gday All,
Going to take a couple of POMS out from work next week that are keen to get onto a few fish, thinking about heading out into the sound for the first time (from Freo) thought i would try and keep it as flat as possible as i dont think many of them have there sea legs.
I have never fished in the sound before but looking at the search engine on here and the Navionics app i was thinking of hitting up D9 or maybe out the back of Garden island to FFB
i understand the issue is most of the fishing will be morning and during the day and we might miss out on the pinkies but where do you think the best chances would be to find something for the boys to latch on to?
Worst comes to worse il find some sort of reef out there and send some floaters out, burley up and try and stretch there arms on some sambos.
Thanks again gents as always any help appreciated.
Cheers Dan

If your fishing during the
If your fishing during the day and weather permits i would definitely head out to FFB. Like you mentioned with snapper in the sound you will find that they have bite times (sun up and sun down), if your fishing during the day your decreasing your chances.
Fishing the FFB will increase your chances of other species like Sambo's (there is plenty around atm), Breaksea cod, chances of snapper, if your lucky even dhu fish.
Anchor up on a nice lump berly up and you should have some fun :)

Thanks mate appreciate your feedback, was what i was thinking, what is the ground like at 5 fathom, im guessing its reefy? glad to hear there is plenty of Sambos out there atm, will be looking forward to them latching onto one of them, great fun they are.
any reccomendations on inside the sound if its a bit windy out the back? never fished around that area so im not sure of the ground if its reef or just search around for a couple lumps.
Thanks Again.

not much inside really to
not much inside really to catch during the day, unless youre happy with bread and butter stuff and squid. Hit up ffb, go over it until your on the back edge, usually 15-20m deep, the ground starts breaking up a bit. try get your anchor on some sand in between all the lumps and get some burley going. Heaps of skippy out there at the moment , and nice kgw around 50cm, pinkies and just legal dhuies. Most likely get a couple sambos too. You'll get a shit tonne of wrasse but just keep sifting through them and you'll get something nice!

FFB has plenty of reef
FFB has plenty of reef structure but as beau was saying if you head out around the 20 meter mark and find yourself some broken ground or few lumps just anchor up and berly should get some fish stirred up. Be patient aswell sometimes it may take a while for the bigger fish to come around at first you will start to catch skippy, herring, wrasee, but once you start catching them the bigger species wont be far behind.
If it is to windy to head out on the ffb you could try places like harding rock, sulphur rock, D9. You never know you might find a hungry school but there more then likely going to feed on dawn and dusk. Just anchor and berly up and flick few soft plastics around have a few drift baits out.
It is coming up to spawning season for them so they have known to bite at weird times.. like mid day on an outgoing tide

Go over FFB
Water depth drops off to around 26 metres and there is then a secondary line of reef which jumps from 26 up to 22/21 and then sharply down again to 28 NB there are gaps in this structure so if you miss it first time and get to 30 metres you have gone too far
Zig zag until you find overhangs and caves then seek to precision anchor to hang back not over but very close to those overhangs and edges - burley and enjoy
