Classic WA hulls ?
Submitted by MiSh on Fri, 2016-04-22 16:58
Are there any WA built hulls comparable to the Haines 445/146 I heard the Penguins are a copy of the 16v but did anyone copy the 146 or 17v ?
Chasing a new project to turn into all purpose centre console. Something under 5m but still as capable offshore as in the rivers.

If you can get a hold of a voyager LTD it would be a
good project for you. Very capable offshore (I take mine to the FADs no probs) handles rough conditions and i can launch and retrieve myself .They are old hulls but very strong and seaworthy - I love mine!

Some of the early Frasers
Some of the early Frasers are quite similar to the 17's.
I sold my early 17r late last year. Would of been perfect for what you want.

Maybe a little bit bigger but a bonito 180 was the best hull I ever owned. I`ve got a formula 233 copy now and I reckon foot for foot the bonito was better.
This is one used to be owned by my boss way back when we used to fish Gamex out of it

Fraser 17 another good one and Baron`s are the same hull as the bonito with different sides, one planked the other smooth.

Shut me down if I'm wrong
But didn't voyager, fraser, swiftcraft and one more other use the same hull mould? Either way there are some great hulls to choose from for a project miSh

Thunderbird
hey Sunshine, I have a thunderbird and find that yes, it is a solid tub ,though through in a bit of chop and it skates around like bambi on an ice lake. It has been fitted out with reverse chines on the last refurb, assume this was to mitigate this skating issue. How how you fount them in this regard?

Why
Why fit reverse chines to a boat that already has a reasonable flat bottom and sits steady in the water at rest.
If it had a deep Vee [and Thunderbirds don't] then yes, it would explain it.
Most of them came out with 120hp Mercruisers and the added weight made then a quite good sea boat but those which were fitted for outboards either stock or altered by their owners didn't handle as well

Why
Unsure of engine history other having a black anchor on it when I purchased, swapped out for 115 v4 yammy. It would seem the chines may have been fit to try and stop the slip sliding and hold a little more steady when in motion. As you said, when at rest it's a mighty stable boat.

Me and the old man had a Haines v146 and did a lot of inshore fishing from it. After having my (bigger) boat for a few years now I wish we kept the Haines so I could take it out and really test it. I think it was a lot more capable than we ever gave it credit for.

classic 15 ft
There is a 15 ft hull which was produced by Voyager and Fraser and even some others, including Bonito, which is what I had for my first boat.
As it was my first boat I never took it offshore much more than 5 or 6 kays, so I can't tell you much about it's offshore ability, but it was a great little hull. http://www.boatsonline.com.au/boats-for-sale/used/trailer-boats/voyager-runabout/173287 or http://www.boatsonline.com.au/boats-for-sale/used/power-boats/voyager-runabout/184474
Fairly recently Commodore boats also used this hull.
Otherwise the Fraser 5.2 or 525 could be a good option. heaps around and Commodore even built a C/C version of it.

Not a WA built hull, but the Caribbean Safari is around 5m and can take around 130hp on the back.

Pacemaker
There were a few 17 foot Pacemakers built, same beam as the 19 foot versions but 2 feet shorter. They were built when it was the fashion to put fibreglass in at a good thickness and not paper thin

Thanks guys, the 17ft pacemaker sounds interesting. From all reports the haines 17 is an awesome hull but very tender at rest

Depends what you are after.
Depends what you are after. The 17r are a great sea hull because of the deep v. The trade of is they are a little tender but you have to remember they are only a 5.3 and quite narrow. I never found mine overly tender when drift fishing and I'm 130 kg. Did many big runs wide of murions, multiple montes trips etc.
Just make sure you don't underpower it. Need at least 115 to push them properly.

What's your budget?
There's a 17 ft Fraser hull in Mandurah on Gumtree C-Mist is her name. I liked at it the other day picking up something else. Boat trailer motor ... 70hp for $4500 is what the bloke said he'd take. ... looked good value at that price imo.

Swiftcraft are a good compromise
I've an old Dominator thats more than capable offshore and inshore. They are reasonably stable at rest and great going with the chop but if you push them going into it they will slap as they flatten out at the transom, (hence their stability).

Yep mighty swifty
Have had 2 sea runners (15 foot) and last one I bought mariner 17 .5 feet. Which I still have . Pretty good hull. Couldn't get dominator at the time. Big small boat if that makes sense
