When I was up there
I caught heaps of Queenies, small GT's and Golden Trevs with with 1-2oz white leadhead jigs. Cast into the tide or drop next to the pylons if the tide is heading away from the jetty then a fast jigging retrieve would usually excite them enough to hit it.
Only prob is anything over about 2-3kg (most queenies i caught were over 5kg) you had to gaff. Kept us pretty well fed.

The Jetty is a long drop
And as Matt said, hauling anything with half size up needs a gaff, or bloody strong line/leader.
I have fished it a few times, but aimed at small fish with small lures. Totally agree with the leadheads. C&R Im not sure about, as the drop would certainly hurt me, let alone the poor fish. I eventually decided to fish pretty close to shore and scrambled (weirdly) to the beach a couple of times with bigger fish (Queenies) trying to C&R.
The fishing close to shore on the jetty is almost crap, with the middle onward the best spot IMO. Poor Queenies arent the toughest beast on the block, and even a blunt rope gaff usually does mortal injuries, and I dont think they like a dump from a boat much, let alone a drop off a few Mtr's on their skiny ass.
I dont know if I did any fish a favour, but used cheap line as a long wind on leader, and just cut the line on more than one fish, leaving a cheap leadhead hanging from its gob, with a few mtr's of line dangling behind it. Thought at the time it was better than killing it, but afterwards I thought differently.
