Boat Rego Rort
Submitted by Travisd on Thu, 2013-07-18 11:41
$195 for 12 months rego now for a 18footer- and trailer just around the corner
Coming from a state that has a massive shortage of boat ramps along the coast can anyone explain to me how this is spent

i'll tell you how its not feckin spent,
it certainly isn't spent informing boaties of current rule enforce/adjustments..
went squiddin with the old man 2 weekends ago, launching from woodies, DOT were there doing safety check. all good except...
...flares out of date by a month.
"sorry mate, I cant let you go out (even in the sound), without in-date flares". the woodies shop had sold out...
near on every single boat had to turn around and go home. where else are you going to buy flares at 7am on a sunday morning? lucky for me, I live 5 mins away, and I convinced the missus to bring the set from my other boat (although no browny points achieved for getting her out of bed at 7am).
worst part is, as stated above, we pay a premium to own and run a boat here in this state. the least they could do would be either send us a letter (after all, they have no problems sending us licensing bills...), or even erect a sign at all major boat ramps, stipulating any adjustments they have made to rules/regs.
fisheries had no problems doing similar when they adjusted cray limits, so its not as if its unachievable.

take it further
the flare thing was pretty well debated on here a year ago, not that I agree with it.
Rego increases-write to your local member or better write and visit his office. I did regarding gun licences tripling and boat also and quickly got a reply that as they had many contacts from SSAA members and it would be presented to the Police Minister.
Unfortunately no one does anything until THEY receive theirs so Gov gets a trickle all year rather than a torrent all at once.
Likely nothing will change but its no good if people complain here but do nothing else...

DOT couldn't care less, they just do what the minister tells them.
You need to talk to your local elected member who can, if they choose talk to the minister

Flares
Ring 1300 863 308, option 6 (takes a few minutes to be answered, so have a beer handy) and ask for your free 'Don't Expire' Sticker and DOT will post it out.
Would be nice if they posted them out with your boat rego renewal.....but maybe all will not want one.
Some other useful info;

Seriously, this information about flares needing to be in date on July 1st has been extensively advertised. We have been telling our club members about it every meeting for at least 6 months.

advertised where??
I knew about it via the mighty FW forum, but when I checked 6 months ago, they were in date. I thought I still had a few months left.
tell me where else it was so "extensively advertised"?? I didn't get shit via mail (not even a free email), like it should've rightly been.

I received a couple of emails about it through my Vmr membership and I saw a few newspaper pieces about it.
Just about every forum has discussed it as well.

Yeah i gotta admit that i was told by DET early last summer. At that point we had a container full of old ones which were no longer acceptable.
IN relation to the opening post. Any idea how much of the upgrade at Point Peron and Leeuwin was paid for by rego? Honest question. With paid parking in Leeuwin, I guess that would have funded a bit of it but i really dont know.

flares...
The only reason I know about the expired flares is as I have alwasy tried to keep ones with a current expiry date for saftey I would have to find out they dont work one day that said had I not chatted to Rod tho I would never have known of the Must have rule.

Thing that shits me is I
Thing that shits me is I have two packs of flares in bloody good order both out of date. The things aren't cheap. Surely they could do spot check on condition rather than expiry. Some sort of anti tamper, water proof packing. I've some of the real old type smoke flares and they work well, trust me.

flares
i pulled in at Finucane island ramp a year or so ago,
inspectors went over everything, skippers ticket good, boat fishing lic good, epirb, lifejackets evything good, even had throw net lic which many dont bother with.
checked my flares, just out of date-I was polite and said no worries I will go past the boat shop on the way home and replace them.No go, had to fine me.
This at a place when many get away with murder because of the 'traditional rights" factor.

Absorbent Rego
sucks, considering how much the average boat gets used, not forgetting the trailer rego. Might note down how many Kls I do for the year and then complain.
As for the flares, debated Iknow, but nothing short of a joke. i have some that are as old as mathusal and have tested some in my shed, worked a treat.
Seriously, how much safety shit do we need on our craft..............but, every boat should have an EPIRB no matter where they are.
Yes my 5.8m cost $194

Bloody good question
To launch at the Dawesville ramp is $10.00 or it was last time I looked. I would also like to know where my licence money goes. I'm just waiting for good old Collin to put a yearly renewal charge on the RST.

Flares and life
Flares are given a shelf life by the manufacturer as they can guarantee that the pyrotechnic composition of their product will perform as advertised 100% of the time whilst in life. As the composition of the fill is degraded due to water ingress, age, UV, moisture, vibration, harsh handling etc, the fill starts to deteriote. As a consequence for example, 12 months after the shelf life on 97% will perform correctly.
Now, 97% may seem quite high, but if you needed your flares to work due to an emergency and yours were in the 3% that fail, I guess you wouldn't be too happy. It could be the difference between life and death. Imagine if it was your kids relying upon you to keep in life flares in your vessel. The choice is easy to me.
Sincerely
Willy

for that to be a valid
for that to be a valid argument youd need to put up also the failure rate of a new flare-but 97% for one flare so the chances of both parachute flares failing would be less than 1 in 10000.

Disclaimer, my personal view
Disclaimer, my personal view please dont get too wound up is that Fisheries is a big business or worse. I just hate it that they are getting all this money from boaties and fishos only to use against us with more officers and more technology to catch you out after they have gone thru their extensive checklist and found out you have a chaffed anchor rope or theres mould on your lifejacket or your flares are out of date by one day. Protecting fish might be on the agenda somewhere, raising revenue would be higher thats for sure.

must be an attitude thing
I've been checked many times by dot and fisheries and never had a problem and found them to be nothing but courteous and freindly
having said that everything they check is in order. I've also got off speeding on the road with a caution just by being humble and holding my hand up when I kinow i was wrong

For sure
For sure, from both sides.
Ive been checked many times and only had a few positive experiences. Yes I also have gotten off road infringements by being honest.
DOT are just the same I shoulda ranted about those guys instead as thats where the boat rego goes too.

FUNNY....?
That's funny - EVERY time we've been checked (with the last two times being 25nm off shore), they've been rude, arrogant PRICKS!!!???
Perhaps we weren't smiling broadly enough for them, as they intruded on our pleasant day out wide - check away at the ramps, BUT, why harass people on the water???
Given how "tight" funding is, I would've thought that this was a grossly inefficient use of resources compared to ramp checks?
Every time they jump on someone's boat, barking orders, they should remember who fucking pays their wages!!
BTW - on each occasion everything they checked has been spot on.

Seems
the more we pay......the more these gov't dept's waste.
My mate had the elaborate Fisheries vessel come along side 38nms out of Bunno for a catch and regs check.
Oh Re the flares, the change of regualtions were brought about by the Pro's having a whinge about them having to keep theirs up to date, so why shouldn't the Rec's.

Having had a fair bit to do with WAFIC and other professional fishing associations over the years I can say that I have NEVER heard that even mentioned.
So-did you just "hear it from a mate" or is there any basis to this?

WAFIC
Was talking to a couple of blokes from WAFIC 2 days back and they knew nothing about it.
Also talked about their electronic shark repellent trials on the wetliners here, not much difference between when turned on or off but the boys on the boats reckon the trip after was pure murder with more shark damage than they've ever had before. Payback is a real bitch.

The pricks came racing into
The pricks came racing into my boat in Exmouth last month! Before anyone could put their rod in holder to turn around and grab my mates Demon Blood they'd smashed into it with their roof, They'll be receiving a bill if she snaps next time it loads up! The way they handled their boat was unsafe and at the end of the day half their job is policing safety......

had the weekend to stew (well spew on it as I had gastro)on this but it is blatant revenue raising and its not right
A simple rate multiplied by length is a fair system.

boat regos
I have spoken with DOT they say marine and harbours are responsible for boat rego so I rang them spoke to a very officious woman there who said the price of rego for a 5m boat had gone up 20 dollar I asked about why is there a 100 dollar difference between a 4.7m boat and 5 m boat she couldn't answer, so I asked what formula they use when setting prices she didn't know and said she just sends out the bill she was getting angry by now so I asked to speak to someone further up the food chain at first she said no after I point out that they were all public servants and why wouldn't her supervisor be able to take an enquirery from the general public in the end she went to get the supervisor after waiting 10 minutes on hold she came back to me took my number and told me some one would call me that was yesterday I am still waiting . next stop troy chair sniffer buzwells electoral office as he is minister responsible

Sea Rescue
Would be nice if it did go to sea rescue but it doesn't. It goes in to consolidated revenue and on to any pet projects these pricks can think of to get themselves re elected.
Note that it happened early in their term of government so that you will have forgotten about it when the next election comes round.

boat rego rorts
got a phone call from the transport ministers office from his policy adviser a woman called Anika she explained the rego rates goes this way below 5 m is a certain figure and then 5m to 10m above that it is different I explained that a 100 dollar difference between a 4.7m boat and a 5m didn't seem right as we are talking about 30mm she agreed it didn't seem right and would look into it I tried to explain to her most rec fishers would have boats under 7m and how could 5 m rec fishing cost the same to rego as a 10m luxury cruiser as we already pay trailer rego skippers tickets and fishing license fees she said she hadn't realized and that it would be looked at it,well I have done my part suggest every one rings his office and express their displeasure we get burnt enough his number is 65526400 I forgot to ask her why we have to put a rego sticker on our boats when car rego stickers have been done away with I must admit she did sound some what sympathetic

Boats up to
6m can be quite easily towed with the average family car, but once they go past 6m up to 10m then everything gets a bit regalative in the way of vehicles, overwidth, braking systems and so on.
What I'm saying is, it appears that the average Family is being slightly penilised with the way the rego system is set up.
It's obvious when one can afford a boat over 6+metres they will be able to afford the jump in rates, pretty much like a house and so on.
Just my two bobs worth.
