If I was you guys I wouldn't worry about public moorings.
Some of the public moorings are a little exposed in high winds (pending on the wind direction), you will be much better off getting in close to protection and throwing the pick. You will have a much more comfortable nights sleep. Just set 2 anchors and make sure they are heavy enough for your boat.
Alternatively the moorings at the bottom of the middle group are a right up close to shore and will provide great shelter from a blowing southerly.
Behind middle island is great ground for anchoring.
Set up a good windbreak for your boat ,or even one you can set up on a beech ,lots of wind .You will be glad to get out of it!WATCH OUT FOR SHARKS WAS UP THERE WHEN SKIPPER OF CHARTER BOAT WAS TAKEN FROM BACK OF BOAT GOING FOR A QUICK DIP.(TIGER)WAS IN SHALLOW WATER.Anchor area 28,44.646 S/113,48.809 E Morley island.good area to troll for corel trout also.
Brilliant anchorage well protected with the biggest tailor I have ever seen at night, bow of boat on the coral rubble stern in 6 metres......... I was taken there, the way in is a little tricky but someone on here will know where I mean and the coords

just got back
middle island has 2 moorings that are first come first served,
its a safe anchorage anyway if you cant get on the mooring
you can push down to pelseart island and there are a couple moornings in there as well
there is safe anchorage down that way also
you can anchor on the inside of stick near middle island which is safe sand as well but not as well protected
what are you taking over?

Left my car at the marina for 4 days in march with no problems. General talk is its ok, but its always on your mind when returning from the island.
