6 wk trip from Perth-Darwin, boat rod/location advice needed..

Hey guys,

As title lets on the missus and i will be doing a 6 week trip from Perth up to Darwin as our honeymoon taking in such sights as Exxy, Broome, Cape Leveque and doing the gibbs river rd. Will be taking the patrol loaded up, sleeping in the rooftop tent and towing a 5m C/C ally. So basically fully self sufficient for up to 7 days at a time.

Really wanted some advice on what size boat rods and reels i should look at purchasing and how many? Have 2 rods i could use already a 5'6" wilson live fibre venom 450g jig stick (i know not designed for trolling) and a 7'6" FWA heavy popping rod. I only have one reel a stella which i switch between depending on what fishing im doing. What overhead reels and rods should i look at? Mainly for trolling up north for Marlin, mack, sailys, tuna etc

Also we have only been in WA for 1.5 yrs and havent really travelled much up the coast are there any locations or some favorite spots you guys love which we should take time to check out? That way i can start to plan and buy the required gear gradually before the trip. Wont leave until April 2014 so have time to accumulate some goodies :) Can't wait to get going!! Just bought our first home over here and dont plan on leaving, WA is amazing!

Apprieciate any info

Thanks a lot

Chris

Sounds like a good plan.

Mate there is so much possible with that set up. Look at a map, pick a spot and specifically ask info on that or use the search.

But so many options up the coast, and I can probably offer some advise on the Karratha/Dampier area, but then accomodation here is pricey.

I was more asking for any

Tue, 2012-08-07 12:41

I was more asking for any places that people have visited that really may not be regulary visited but are worth a look. We are planning to visit jurien bay and kalbarri before the trip so we can skip past them. Would like to visit Steep point, Gero, Carnavon, Coral bay, Dampier, karratha, hedland, broome, cape leveque, derby, kununurra, Wagait beach. etc. Then not sure around Darwin will just wing it.

What about boat rods/reels sizing? tyrnos 20/30 15/24kg gear?

Also would April be the best time of year to do it weather wise? Want to avoid rain, cyclones and worst of the heat.

Lol i know i was so stoked

Lol i know i was so stoked when she agreed to it and actually insisted on me buying a boat so we could best utilise the coast and water. Only took a trip to exxy to sort her out, then started to sell the whole romantic b/s about having beaches to ourselves, catching dinner just her and me.. Didnt take much convincing. The patrol is fully decked to make her trip comfy though and that wasnt cheap ;)

a 15kg trolling combo

Tue, 2012-08-07 15:15

a 15kg trolling combo something like a Shimano Tyrnos 20 with a suitable rod, a couple of light flick sticks with 4000 stradics for light shore work, you've got the popper rod but in all honesty it probably won't get much work and i'd be using the jig stick as a makeshift bottom basher maybe with another combo for bottom bashing too with a higher gear ratio like a Shimano Torium with 50lb braid, attach a wind on leader to it and you could troll using lightish drag setting for the shock factor.

Gnaraloo is a great desitnation along the coast, onslow as well, port smith, point samson instead of karratha etc.

Fully agree with Brucesta

If I started out again with a boat I would probably go Pt Sampson, but hey dampier is 1/4 the distance, and have got use to it. Better for mackies and even BB closer in. From Dampier you have to know a few spots.

Also agree about Port Smith. Missed by heaps but it is a great light boating spot, and has some muddies to boot.

Exxy is just about a must. You can also look at 40mile beach and Cleaverville for fishing and crabbing options.

After that I would say miss Hedland (sorry guys from there but better up the coast). Broome well you just have to go to keep the Mrs happy. I find the fishing there needs some knowledge, its not just get in the tub and off you go. Launching from the beach is "fun" with the massive tides. Watch the locals do it, get a front wheel and long robe. Otherwise you might have to rely on others to pull your bogged vehicle out. Done it before, and with a Port Authority (X harbours and Lights) and a Fisheries 4x4 watching had to rely on others to be the good sammi's. After I was freed they both came over and inspected the Lic's and fish.

After this up north you dont want your honeymoon ruined by walking leather boots and Purses, and doing the Dirt on the Gibb River will tests your car and trailor as mentioned.

Cyclone season

Tue, 2012-08-07 19:05

Spinna if leaving in April the roads up in the kimberleys can be of some concern right up until May on the Gibb, don't be put off just have alternate plans as sometimes up here we can't get out to some of our better spots until early June. They try to grade the road to El questro around Easter but unsure off what happens on the other end. Cyclone Rossita, Vance, Bobby and Chloe are a few that where late season cyclones. Good luck.

Great cheers for the info

Great cheers for the info guys! I'm a fitter so will be doing some reinforcements to trailer and making sure new bearing etc will also take spares just incase. I know the weather can be so unpredicatable up here might delay the start of trip to start of may might be a bit safer.

Brucresta A 15kg combo sounds good, is it worth having 1x15kg and 1x24kg or just stick with 2x15kg? Any suggestions on rods to pair with the reels? i have a stradic Ci4 on a t-curve 5-8kg rod so there is one of the shore combos sorted.

crasny1 what do you mean walking leather boots and Purses? Point taken regarding beach launching, will watch the locals to sort the technique. Got a winch and max trax so self recovery should hopefully be an option

just go with 2x 15 kg combos.

Wed, 2012-08-08 09:42

just go with 2x 15 kg combos. rod wise i like the live fibre range and the shimano t-curves but i'm not a gear head like some on here, just duck into one of our sponsers and i'm sure they can hook you up with a nice couple of combo's at good prices
