Today's Ruby

Got out there a bit late this morning, pretty shithouse conditions as well, a lot more than forecast. Out at the Rons the inside was alive but nobody was hungry, got one small red and a baby bluebone. Headed wide to the 180's and got a few small sharks, the ledge looked promising for another day when theres less drift. Headed out to the 280's and had one drift as it was pretty late by then, got one decent rubes that fought all the way up. Had one more drift but the current had picked up and made it too difficult to hold bottom. Did a lot of miles for not much, but christened the new leccy and sussed out a few spots. Weather was meant to be good all weekend but has gone to shizen, ahh well.

Nice fish mate they look so cool in a photo. Nice deep water to. Do they taste nice?
Is there any chance at all that a fish bought up that deep could swim down and survive? Well done mate look forward to seeing more deep water fish pics.

lovely looking fish there.
lovely looking fish there. you don't want too much fish in the freezer anyway.
If I spent half as long fishing , as I do reading this bloody forum , I'd be twice the fisherman I am.

You managed to escape the GBs then
As has been said ruby snapper do look so good in a photo. I take it you were using bait rather than jigs this time. Do rubies generally hold close to the bottom or off it?

yup
Yeh Damo, would hate to think how many she's racked up since owning her. Previous owner did 850 hours in 10 years, I've done 120 in 2.5 months and gone pretty wide in the search, has treated me well so far.
Danno, one of the better fish in the ocean, bit of a soft flesh and a subtle flavour. I don't think you would ever be able to release one from that depth, unless you brought them up extremely slow but even then, I guessing not. There is no size limit on them anyway.
Alan, they are relatively close to the bottom, the 5 meter zoom is usually full of soundings. I was going to get some pics yesterday, but it was too hard to do as I was rushed for time. Next time I'm out there I will get some pics, but so far I've found that there is a dropoff/hole where the greyband live and the rubies tend to be on the flats either side.
New reel went awesome, very happy with the bull 1000 and pretty happy it only took 5 days to get here. Looking forward to getting out there and finding some more ground. I don't even really care about the fillets, I just want to explore and see what else is out there in that deep stuff. Got some areas off Tantas I'm excited to try.
No worries Jeffro, by the way, just the carton would have been fine!! I know you would have done the same for me mate! Will get you out there next time the weathers good, it makes a pretty big difference actually being able to see the fish on the sounder... ;))

Nice fish Adam. How big do
Nice fish Adam.
How big do Rubys get. I watched a pro unloading his catch from a three day haul in Exy once, he had a few monster (30kg +) red coloured fish. Cant remember what they were. Any idea on what they might have been? He said he was fishing 300m-500m.

20kg
I've seen 20kg rubes and have heard they get to 30kg. I think those spots are well guarded by the pro's and would take a fair bit of recon time. Looking forward to getting into the 15kg fish though, you feel every kick in your back even with these 8kg jobbies.

Can I have one like this please, its 66lb?
The dude is in diego garcia, the fishing there is totally batshit.
This one scares me, not sure I want to swim in the ocean anymore, it went 107lb.

Metro ruby population was
Metro ruby population was smashed by deep sea trawling. Their tonnage dropped by a factor of 10 in just 10 years but I don't think they have been targetted by the pros in the metro region since about 2006.
Maybe there are a few big fat sneaky ones waiting for us!
PS: sorry Adam for bombing your thread ;)
