Jaws theme
I'd be fibbing if I said the thought didn't cross my mind but there pretty well fed up this way Maxy. This i do know because I've lost some good fish to the buggars.
I'm based in Onslow Maxy. I spent the night camped down at Long Island.

So
I assume when you come back from the days fishing it's low tide and in the mornings is high hence having to swim out? Why can't you have an extra long rope to the high tide line?.......Maxy.......

Mooring Boat
Hey John when we moored our boats at Long we anchored the boat with a huge Sand Anchor and had another rope from the rear of the boat running back to the beach tied to a couple of star pickets. It was easy dragging yourself along the rope and the boat was always pointed out to sea.

Are the star pickets always there or take you own. Depending on the weather I may spend a few nights over there myself when we are up there next week.

Faith in the anchor
Yeah there was another boat there that had the rope coming off the rear.
However having spoken to a guy (Darryl Hitchen) who used to run charters based at Long Island out of a 8 metre ali using a single anchor arrangement, I went with the same setup that he used for many a year without incident. 30lb Manson Plough Anchor, 3m 12mm chain, 12mm shackles wired shut and 25metres of 18mm nylon rope (3500kg breaking strain). Very expensive initially ($400), but good piece of mind when your asleep at night.
The water is 3-4metres deep with a nice sandy bottom. Depending on predicted winds you can anchor/camp on either side of the southern end of the island.
Boat had swung out that far because of the morning easterly (in the evening it was 50 metres closer to the beach).
Great place that I'll be visiting a lot more in the future.

have a similar set up to
have a similar set up to what john has .plenty of chain is the key to a good nights sleep .i quite often use 2 anchors .1 sand 1 reef pick both of the front of the boat.if the boat does drag you can be pretty confident the sand anchor will end up caught in reef not far from the origanal anchor point. big john theres plenty of cheeap blow up canoes on ebay .they make great tenders always in it just the depth that varies
