Yeh I think they're always a dark reddy/brown? It wasn't huge, but a good size.
I'll let you know if it's good eating tomorrow... when I eat it :)
Nah we didn't get much on jigs today. Simon lost a nice fish on a lucanus jig that busted him off on lighter gear. I lost a fish from a school we found in 150m, prob a snapper. And just the squid. Bit quiet really!
We got onto a heap of arrows last year and once cleaned up there seemed to be no taste/quality difference between them and calamari.
I know these make up a big part of the deep water commercial squid boat catch and I'm guessing it makes up a lot of the squid we get in shops.
How did you catch them Tim? They mainly hang in deeper waters hey? They have crazy eyes. Total black, couldn't seem them until after it was dead as it seemed to have them closed when I first caught it. I guess cos of the light.
most have been caught at night under deck lights on jigs, but I've also caught a fair few during the day out in deeper water. They usually came up chasing fish and hung around so we could use the squid jigs.
