 Hey guys

Trying to chase some yabbys to chuck into my tank

Is there any lakes ,dams, ponds north of the river

That I may have a chance with if I chuck in a few nets

Cheers

Lake at Flinders Park on

Lake at Flinders Park on Flinders Ave in Hillarys has a good population of Yabs. Dont worry i doubt you could overfish them out of there. I only ever do one net, one pull and get enough :)

Plus heaps of other lakes around the north suburbs and out towards midland, so there are many many areas to get them.

Cooked or raw?

Plenty of places have fresh water yabbies pre cooked, might need to look further afield for raw yabbies.....  :)

Of all the places you could try, why choose a Class A reserve?  No wonder recreational fishers get a bum rap!

If you are going to use an opera house style yabby net to chase them just make sure you check it every hour or so, as the old long neck turtles get in them and you dont want to leave one in there to drown overnight!

And my advice is to do it at night.......late. Get better catches and you dont get any unwanted attention.

Yep night time with the traps, totally illegal unless on private property dams. I went searchin for yabs in a close to home suburbian pond and got more than I could have hoped....big brown 'crayfish', bloody yumo, might set the traps this weekend!

Depends what classifications

Wed, 2012-09-12 20:25

Depends what classifications the dam, waterhole is situated in. If its in an A class reserve then yes. If its on unclassifed state, crown or even shire/council land its not illegal unless signed otherwise, but the thats a whole different set of laws you may bump into, eg council bylaws, health and safety laws etc.

But like i said, just go at night and you should have no dramas. I have been chasing all sorts of Freshwater Crustaceans around perth since 2006, even scaling some fences here and there :) hahahahahahaha. Amazingly alot of rainwater runoff ponds you find situated around industrial areas hold good populations, just would be a bit iffy eating them, great for aquariums or bait though.

I have caught heaps of Yabbies, Gilgees and Coonacs around NOR. I have even accidently caught marron before which of course i released back, as you dont want to get caught driving in your car with them out of season. Even if you can prove that you didnt get them from the wild you'll still get fined unless you have a receipt of payment for them ie bought them from a Marron farm.

How many do you want.  The local Pond / lake in my suburb has millions

I take the kids there every now and then ... Our record is 90 in one hour !!! I even made a miniature drop net (crab style) with fine prawn net mesh !! Works a treat.

We always release them but I could keep a few biggins if ya want !!!

Honestly mate any permanent

Thu, 2012-09-13 09:54

Honestly mate any permanent watersource, dam, drain, waterhole, will most likely hold Gilgees. Even some intermitent drain/ponds will have them. I have a runoff pond at the park across from my place that dries up over the summer, but still catch heaps of Gilgees, guess they just burrow down into the mud over summer. Bascially anywhere there isnt Yabbbies there will be Gilgees is what i have found. Coonacs are more harder to find, as with Marron too.
