 Mate, any semi permanent

Wed, 2012-10-24 20:52

Mate, any semi permanent fresh water creek or pond/lake inperth will have yabbies in it ( the established ones- not the crystal clear ones in new housing estates etc). You will struggle to breed them in a domestic situation with any regularity unless you are prepared to put a lot of effort into controling water quality and temp. When I was a young keen bream fisho I would catch 50 or so each friday night so I could select the best size baits for the following weeks fishing. I had a home made size grader made out of pvc pipe (looked similar to a road stormwater grate) this would fit on top of a plasic tub. I would empty the trap on to the grader and only the 12mm or less carapace width would fall through(chucked back a few massive yabbies sometimes !). Next step was to take the bait home and mix up a little batch of 5 min araldite and glue an individual shiner hook to each bait. The little critters would then be placed into a plastic 44 gal. drum in my shed, laying on its side with a hole cut out of the top and a el cheapo pond pump to keep the water circulating and oxygen levels up. It is a pain in the ass to tie each individual bait on but the rewards will blow you away. Live yabbies seem to deter the little bream but attract the donkeys. Little tip- If you are fishing the silty areas, pull the claws off, they will dig themselves in. Good luck

Mine bred and carried the eggs and hatched. There was around 20 little yabbies in the tank but i was too lazy and had nowhere to seperate them from the parents so they ate them too lol

I had a poly pond with heaps

Wed, 2012-10-24 19:53

I had a poly pond with heaps of marron, some a foot long, yabbies, koi, and never saw casualties, just ensure there's a hiding place for each. Dont over load as they are messy buggers and the filtration may not cope. The yabbies had small diameter retic cuts and wall bricks and the marron had larger retic pipes and broken terracotta pots. Had a worm farm that was food aswell as marron pellets. Didnt take long for several marron to start carrying eggs, think things started bout this time of year. I returned the egg bearing marron to the suburbian pond I got them from. Was good to have a feed or fresh bait readily available. Im waiting (hoping) for my blue moba frontosas to breed otherwise Id go and set my traps to get one of the monster marron and keep it as a pet, maybe risk a sarratoga as a mate (stay at top of tank and my tank is taller than usuall), would be cool....

Breeding marron/yabbies

Wed, 2012-10-24 20:41

I get some shade cloth and tie it into a loose ball, this gives the hatched eggs some where to hide. The gold fish might eat a few but you'll lose most to larger marron/yabbies. Best to pull the ball of shade cloth out and transfer young to a seperate tank. I've never had a problem with marron and gold fish but yabbies will attack ad eat almost any size gold fish. I don't think marron will bother the algae eaters but not to sure how they'll get on with yabbies. Make sure ya fatten a few up for the BBQ.

Thu, 2012-10-25 16:13

when we used to have them, we got a spa bath from the local salvage yard for $30 (it was brand new but had dents etc) then we put in pvc pipe for hiding places. We found when we put in the yabbies the seemed to destroy the marron? We were told this happens quite a lot. We used to feed them carrots, which they loved. One day when we had a few in the inside fish tank we found one down the hallway nearly in the bedroom. The little bugger had climbed up the air pipe and got out!

They aint called Cherax

They aint called Cherax destructor for nothin. I vaguely recall something about yabbies being more aggresive or disruptive to the surroundings etc. and displacing Marron.
