Working in Onslow

Looking at taking a job in Onslow. Be there for 4 weeks each trip. Just looking for info on what's in town and what the land based fishing is like. Anyone else working up there? Wondering if it's worth bringing the family up once in a while to break up the time away from them.  Just not sure if there is much for them to do if they came up for a week or two. Any advice or info would be much appreciated.

I have been to Onslow twice

Tue, 2013-02-12 08:20

I have been to Onslow twice when travelling around, despite the stories of great fishing I turned around and continued to head north both times. I remember the guy at the fuel stop saying to me "not stopping mate.. haha " He had watched me drive around, look at the caravan park etc and then eventually drive off with some purpose to the fuel station . Not a place for families or kids I wouldnt have thought ... "sh**hole" ..springs to mind lol

there are plenty of queenies around the boat ramp on high tide and i have seen a barra swimming around the jetty mud crabs not too far away! not sure what the catch of the rock groyne at the entrance to the ocean but there are always guys fishing there! i would certainly be taking my rod! and there is a charter boat that operates from the mackeral islands who catches plenty of fish! (not sure whether he is still there since they closed the island though)

For what it's worth my misses will not be returning....visited a couple of times for a beach fix from Pannawonica...misses reckons the water is upside down...stayed at the park on water front in town...they have cabins....visit it once to tick the box but keep the car running....

Not a great holiday spot

Unless you have a boat

Either a tinnie for the creeks or a bigger one for offshore.

The creeks have crabs but they are small systems and soon depleted

Small trevs/queenies come in with the tide and many fish for them at Beadon creek or 4 mile entrances

The bay out front has bluies over winter and plenty of small northern species including trout from the coral patches

All the serious fishing however is 30 odd kilometrs away past the islands

 I was getting mangrove

Tue, 2013-02-12 12:51

I was getting mangrove jacks, malabar cod and heaps of bream off the rock groine at the beadon creak mouth, unwaited mulies just pick the tide right or it will end up under the rocks as quick as u can cast it out. I saw a lot of trevs and queenfish being caught by the other guys i worked up there with, but that was 18 months ago I think it has changed a little bit up there.

If u have a boat or can ever hire one the salt jetty is pretty good but i think its a bit of a no go zone not sure , some of the guys got a few cobia not far from it

Gday Tapout, Onslow is what

Wed, 2013-02-13 17:52

Gday Tapout, Onslow is what you make of it. It's a small NW coastal town that doesn't have the fishing pressure of the other towns (Dampier, Exmouth etc), but doesn't have the amenities of the said towns....yet. Id be jumping in now and getting into what it has to offer before its all gone. In my opinion, the NW would be much further developed by now if the NW coastal highway passed through more of the towns instead of passing around them and Onslow is probably the best example of what it used to be like fishing up here.
