Thanks lurcha, not sure if there are any of those stores in or around bunbury? but i'll have a look around anyway and if i need i might go in and ask at getaway they're always pretty friendly and helpfull in there.

back in the old days 30 years plus we just used to tie our own with different breaking strain of mono probably three different ones start at say 4lb down to one or six to three your choice

I guess that would work as a temporary fix until im able to buy a new one. Ill have to go and have a look around see what mono lines ive got around the place. Thanks for the tip

You can tie up your own ones either by joining multiple bits of line of different weights, but can also create twisted knotted ones. Chris at flyworld is pretty good. I'm sure he'd be able to send you down a couple of leaders for a coupla bucks postage. Could get some flies and other things while you're at it too.

I much prefer a proper tapered leader to a knotted or twisted one though. They are much easier to avoid getting tangled midair if you dont have the most perfect casting. Less knots to catch on things too. I tie a reasonable length tippet on the end and I find they last quite a while too.

What you would do its get a long length of line (maybe 8-10lb ish for light line) and put it in a drill and twist it up (or by hand if youre a masochist). Then you tie off the end (so you have a double twisted leader then a bit of a single strand like this ooooooooooooooooo#---------) Then you keep twisting and so it twists back onto itself so you have double-double twists, then double twists then single line. Each should be about the same length, about a meter or so. You get a loop at the end you can attach to your flyline (can make one in your flyline if it doesnt have one), and the other end you tie your tippet (perhaps 4lb flurocarbon or something).

However, considering the effort, I just buy the proper tapered leaders :p

I tied a few light mono lines together today just to see how it worked. Went alright but i wasnt really having a proper go at fish with the fly rod i was just flicking a few lures around for some redfin. And i think i will probably end up buying a proper leader but as fishy fingers said thats all they used to have so i guess its a lot better than nothing :)

If your fishing the freshwater, tie yourself this leader,

4-5 ft 20-30lb

2-3 ft of 15lb

1-2 ft of 2-10lb tippet.

I used it last summer in South Island NZ and had no problems at all. If you want to use it in the salt, step up the butt section of the leader to 40-50lb, that helps you turn over larger flies.

Tapered leaders are for the fancy, use your own ones and get out there and have some fun.

Thanks for that paul, but i went out to check this arfternoon ended up looking in bcf and getaway and neither had them. But finally found some at Sports Marine. And that would have been awesome fun! theres no shortage of trout over in nz and there huge! went over a few years back and every little river or stream you were guaranteed to see trout, ended up being so desperate to get one that i hired a rod and licence, even caught one on a handline and sp.
