Transducer placement
Submitted by wez0062 on Fri, 2015-06-12 10:22
Hi guys,
a little advise please. I have a Lowrance HDS7, and was wondering about the correct placement of the transducer. The depth display goes to crap if I go over about 10 knots. Should it be just above the line of the bottom of the boat, or just below the bottom.
any suggestions welcome.

If it is the standard transducer
HST-DFSBL 50+200 kHz 106-77 there is a line down the centre of the transducer, line this up with a straight edge and the bottom of the hull to make sure the angle and depth are right. Post some photos from the side and rear so we can see if there are other issues at play. Is it behind a hull fitting, strake or chine? Is it correctly located and running in clear water, what hull etc?

More info in the sounder
More info in the sounder section under lowrance with the same problem as you. Having had quite a few different sounders on my boat, I have found the lowrance hds touch 7 impossible to get a good trace and bottom at speed even on flat days. Exact same position of tranducer of both my navman and furuno 585 had no problems at all. I have sellected the right tranducer, changed settings and moved the transducer several times. I am now at the conclusion as many others are, that they can be very sensitive and regardless of how much you play round, it stays the same. Good luck.

yep I had the exact same sounder on my previous boat, with exactly the same problem.
Great sounder apart from the constant stuffing up at speed. have to turn it off for a couple of mins, turn it back on and 80% of time is OK, but sometimes it takes 2 or 3 re-boots to get it playing the game

The front edge of the
The front edge of the transducer should sit approx 1/8 of an inch lower than your hull, the trailing edge (rear) should be slightly tilted forwards, in a section where there will be no extra or added turbulence cause by the hull, usually on the rhs of the boat but depending on which way your prop spins.

my transducer is located on
my transducer is located on the left hand side of the motor, when looking from behind the boat. I am not sure which way my prop turns, but it is a 2014 200HP Etech. the front edge is probably sitting 1/8" above the bottom of my hull.

I too went through this
I too went through this process with a HDS10, you should be on Right side of engine at least 3 inches from propeller radius, tranny tilted trailing edge down on a 3-5 degree angle.
I still had a lot of interference like this.
Installed a 587 in same spot and its perfect.
good luck
