Info on Point Samson

Hi Guys

A good mate of mine is coming over from south australia in a couple of weeks and i was thinking of heading to Point Samson for a week. I have never fished that far up north before and I'am unsure on what sort of fish we might encounter and what are the best times to fish depending on the tides. We are going to take a small boat with us but will also try some landbased fishing as well. Any imformation or pointers would be much appreciated.

Thanks Mark79

land based with a westerly

land based with a westerly catch some gar's from honey moon cove. then float one out on a ballon in front of the tavern there, I used to pick up Max, trevaz, shark and me mate got a black marlin rat from there even..

grab some barra & jacks off the bridge on the way into samson, low tide get out on the mud there with a slice or plastic & 2kg rod & have fun with the baby gt's to 2kg..

Fish the chanel markers. for a good selction of reef fish.

good luck..

Point Samson Options for Mark79

The causeway is a cracka, like justin said, a really low tide is great, walk out on the mud and flick slices / small poppers around for baby GT's and blue nose salmon. Last time lucky tim was here he even raised a barra on a stickbait.

The harbour is another good landbased spot, plenty of barra get caught there not a bad spot to soak a livie and have a cold one. You will see where some of the locals are fishing and that is a good place to start

all the creeks in the area produce, and your in luck as it is barra season. If you want a bit more info on barra check out the latest issue of reeltime mag, has a fair bit of info in there.

Even with a small boat you can access some really good offshre ground. All of the inshore islands produce bluebone, big tides are generall better, drifting crab baits down on a handline might seem old fasioned but great fun when you pull in a horse. The islands are also great for light tackle spinning with plastics or lures. Work the current lines for queenies and trevs, good fun, even caught tarpon on plastics out that way.

All the inshore areas are worth a dive too if your into your diving / spearing, got to pick your day this time of year the water generally gets a bit dirty

heaps more to do, trolling around 3 meter reef, delambre reef and tessa shoals is common and well known but always seems to produce good size spanyids, tuna and other pelagics, even hooked the odd saily there

Jigging in these areas can produce some nice trout and the like as well.

Plenty more options than what i have mentioned mate, i have only just scratched the surface but i hope it helps a little

Cossack?

How does the quay at Cossack fish? I tried many years ago, briefly, for little luck, but it looks so promising. I was working up there at CL last week, went out there first afternoon for a look on low run-out tide, what looked like sharks had mullet up against the sandbar on the opposite side and were putting on a show. Occasional big boils and skipping mullet mid-channnel made me wish i had a good spin outfit and popper/stickbait. A tourist pulled up and started tossing half mulies, had a horse of a bream within 5 minutes--looked like a yellowfin, not a pikey , but I know they are the rubbish up that way.
