Times are changing

So far this year there have been Cobia ,Wahoo, Spangled Emperor, and loads of Tiger sharks and even a Whale shark cruising through. Not to mention the Spanish Mackeral catches are increasing every year. So do we still think the Great White population off metro hasn't increased? Like I said the game has changed.

Seems like a long-winded way to start up another shark thread.

Fisheries said the only commonality in all the GW attacks was that they were done in water under 22° C. You would be getting few to none of those fish in water much below 22° C.

 It is linked though.  Warm

It is linked though.  Warm water from north pushing cool water from the south to different places.

more importantly though... Where are these spangles showing up?

correct me if I'm wrong, but I don't think a single person has been killed by a shark just swimming around in the surf at a metro beach?

Also, and I'm a bit of a claytons global warming expert... Some skeptics say we are heading back to 1970s style cooling, and that global warming is a crock.  If so then where are the effing metro salmon runs!

I've heard this 'cooling'

Sun, 2013-02-03 10:31

I've heard this 'cooling' scenario from a work mate and personally think its laughable...models etc definately point towards warming. Which in a sense is good news for us fishos as the ocean temp warms, stuff you'd normally never see down this way start to appear in greater number. Metro red emperor anyone? However conversely, the warmer the water gets (and this is from what I understand of what I've read) the more depleted the stocks get in other areas as fish migrate to more habitable zones and then there is the acidifying of oceans due to the ocean's great capacity to absorb Co2 which is very bad news, leading to marine life mortality and much reduced fish stocks.

An expert in some field that

Sun, 2013-02-03 12:30

An expert in some field that isn't climatology....

Take note when an expert or scientist says we aren't having an effect on the warming we're seeing is probably from a completely different field. There hasn't been a single peer reviewed paper showing an alternative to human made warming (there's natural effects too, but to explain it all, you need to add humans and co2).

"Trust me, I'm an expert and a doctor! And I say this spleen has to go. Nurse, scalpel!"

"What are you a doctor of?"

"Oh, I'm a doctor of sociology from midland tafe. Now count back from 10"

As for the oceans, last year in particular, we had an La Niña/el niño cycle which means every few years, the oceans get warmer or colder. Global warming adds on top of this. I think this year is supposed to be a little cooler than last, but still pretty warm, so should see some good tropical catches. Once the cycle swings back to cold it won't be quite as warm.... But wait for the next warm cycle after that!

will be curious to see how salmon go this year after the west coast fizzer last year.

Ha I did say Claytons Expert:)  I'm no climate skeptic, but it's an argument they use, and at least if they are right the Salmon will be back:)
