T Curve rod Rust
Submitted by froos on Tue, 2016-09-13 21:27
Went to fit a reel to my 8 month old T Curve and noticed rust at the base of the guides.
The rod has been used maybe four times & always washed on return, then sprayed with Inox.
Rang the shop were I purchased it from & they say it's quite common.
It has stainless steel guides, they look fine, it's only under the glass/binding.
My question is, is it common, is there a fix.

Common
All my 5 or 6 T-curves have the same... one is about 8 years old and has had rust there for probably 7 of them and it still works fine.... I have had an issue where the green coating has split and come off in long strips leaving just the bare blank but it hasn't snapped yet so it doesn't bother me too much...

yes a common problem
with alot of off the rack rods. They use an inferior epoxy and it does exactly that. mainly because it is cheaper and quicker

They all do that
Doubt if I've had a rod that doesn't show discolouration at the binding foot. Flexing of the whole thing under load--you know, when you get a fish on--will allow the edge of the epoxy to pull away just a little from the stainless foot, allowing salt in, and it then sits there and discolours. Cosmetic only.

So a rod has to be custom to be "properly made"?
This is purely a cosmetic thing, has no bearing on strength or longevity, IMO. To each their own--I buy rods to use them, not look at them. So you reckon you could have one of these rods for 10 years or more, used hard, and not show some discolouration in that area? Or don't you keep them that long?

I disagree about it purely being cosmetic
But I am not here to argue the point. Let someone explain what goes into a custom rod one day and you might appreciate where I am comming from. But yes even a custom will need a rebind after a whilst. And no a custom isn't just a pretty rod. It is a lot more than that.
I could go on and on about it here, but I won't(unless you want me to)
Cheers

My properly made custom rods
My properly made custom rods that have been used alot show this same discolouration.....
Its no biggy, I recently had a yellow fin tuna ( double hookup landed one ) on my 17 yr old GF655 Sabre that i paid $700 bucks for back in the day with an Abu Morrum and 50lb braid.
Well we got sharked and for the next hour i was interchanging with my father inlaw giving the shark as much as WE could possibly take in a big swell off Ningaloo.
The 4M swell was not helping and putting extra load on all 4 of us, me the father inlaw, rod n reel and old Mr grey suit.
In the end i tied it to the cleat ( wrapped several times ) and we still rode up n down several swells before the F'n braid let go!!
Moral of the story i was actually still so suprised how much gutz that old set up had......
Go burley up a 100 lb eagle ray or something if you wanna try out you're asthetically not so pleasing rod..........

it does happen all the time,
it does happen all the time, they don't use very high quality eyes. I had a rod rebuilt with almost top of the line guides put on it and don't have that problem any more
i need cheaper hobbies
