Suzuki yamaha merc 2016 models
Submitted by Anonymous on Fri, 2016-08-05 21:33
Anyone have the latest merc 80hp? I'm upgrading my engine in the next couple of months (once good deals start rolling out) and I was considering a suzuki yamaha & now the merc as the 80 is 2.1lt engine capacity. Weight isn't a issue as a heavier motor would be in my faviour as I have a bowrider.
Boat is used for skiing crabbing fishing. Along with a lot of ravo pub runs.

We repowered a year ago.
We repowered a year ago. Went from a older 75 merc 4 to a DF90 suzuki. Cheapest motor in the 90hp 4 stroke bracket ,price going at time was $12500 fitted through Brett Ward.
There was no gain in top end with the suzuki being only a 1.5ltr but economy and mid range performance is unbelievable. Where using on average 20ltrs less in fuel a trip.
Looking at your situation going from a 60 to 80 there wont be huge gains. But having said that ,Merc having the bigger displacement may see a little better than the rest.
Why are you repowering. Whats your WOT now with the 60 zuk.

I love my DF90. Did a trip
I love my DF90. Did a trip 14 miles out of Mindarie in really choppy conditions then continually drove back over my lump to drift for 3 hours. Used $25 worth of petrol!

Wot is 38kmh at 6000rpm
Wot is 42kmh ish at 6000rpm average load. And 4500rpm gives a cruise speed of about 22kmh.
Going from a 60 to the 80 bracket jumps from 3cyl 941cm3 to a 4cyl 1.502cm3 (in the suzuki) so I would assume there would be a big tourque and power difference going from a 60 & 80.

Just got a Merc 150 on my new tub, great engine (3 litre, 4 cyl), the new Merc 4 strokes were created as marine engines rather than taking a bike/car engine with car technology), arguably the technology on the Merc is old school (no twin cam, vtech) but that does mean no cam belts, no valve adjustments etc. so hopefully more robust in a marine environment and looking at the service book, just oil and filter changes so lower servicing (yet to find out lol). Very torquey too judging by mine. Ford vs Holden debate maybe?

Suzuki don't use cam belts either.
They now use timing chains in that size

Yer not sure what others
Yer not sure what others using exactly just thought it interesting re valve adjustments etc. as Mercs use a roller that supposedly never requires adjustment, so servicing is literally just filters and oil change, hope they don't wear out lol. Personally would run a Yammy, Honda, Suzuki, Merc, etc. not fussed, whatever comes with the hull I choose haha

Just had a new 90hp Suzuki
Just had a new 90hp Suzuki (still under 10hrs on clock) fitted and so far really nice setup and power on a 4.85 Trailcraft (had the digital GPS gauge fitted too). Mate has had his Zuk90 for a year or so and loved it, no dramas. I did a fair bit of research and Suzuki seem to have a pretty tough gearbox compared to a Yamaha. It seems to be a ford vs holden kinda topic between Yammi's n Suzuki's, not much in between. Also the Suzuki's have a 5yr warranty aswell.
Like Jack said they use bugger all juice. First run I did for 3hrs used 8lt of fuel!
Just don't buy a Etec!

Mine had over 1100 hours on it when I sold the boat. Bought the software and did all the servicing myself. Had an airbox sensor fail around 750 hours and a neutral position switch wire came off when I was at the murions once but that's all I ever did apart from servicing.
Does anyone know where the love of god goes, when the waves turn the minutes to hours?

just repowering my plate 5.3
just repowering my plate 5.3 alli with a 2016 yammy 90hp 2 stroke
it will be replacing the 97 model 90hp yammy 2 stroke that has been an excellent motor for 19 years
fuel usage and quiet running wont be as good as a 4 stroke , but out of the hole and weight where more important to me ,
the current set up has been perfect with power and balance , so im happy to continue with it

I had too much stuff go wrong
I had too much stuff go wrong on mine, was going great then boom all of a sudden everything turned to sh!t within 10-15hrs running time. Since found out it's a common thing after talking to a few Etec mechanics around Oz.

Do you have some facts ? 10 to 15 hrs is under warrenty. So Im not sure why you had a problem? BRP would of fixed it no question ? What techs did you speak to...? are they actually qualified ETEC mechanics

Had an etec as well, not a real fan now that I look back on it's history
Trim tilt played up a few times, would always happen at the boat ramp annoyingly, ended up replacing pump motor.
Oil pump leaked, was quoted $600 for a newie as they don't have parts listed to disassemble and fix, so decided to pull it apart myself and found an o-ring that had been damaged from assembly, $1 for an o-ring, still not happy with the guys from BRP on that one.
Exhaust valve was stuck (carbon build up), very common problem that was never fixed properly by BRP.
They knew it was a problem with these particular motors, but once out of warranty was up they were happy to replace parts (all of $50, or somewhere close), but not labour (labour was a $1000)
Luckily I didn't have to split the engine as the valve was stuck in the 3/4 open position so didn't really affect performance, but was still noticeable (small miss at hole shot) and problem was always in the back of my mind.
I do like the Merc's as my brother has owned a 150/4 for a while now and loves it.
( forgot to add something about an etec - they stink of 2 stoke smell when wind conditions are unfavourable, use expensive oil, and they're freaking loud and clunk into gear - this all based on a 2008 model, newer ones might be better, if you like the look of a motor that looks like a transformer or deceptacon )

mercs v etec v the rest
My old boys has a 2yrs old Carribean reef runner with a Merc 150 4 banger. It clunks & grinds in & out of gear at different times, takes a few seconds to start and always sounds like its working hard. My 200 Etec is whisper quiet & smooth as a freshly shaven ( you can fill that in ) on slipping in & out of gear. Starts in milliseconds of turning the key & powers out of the hole like buggery. No smoke or fumes
As with any discussions on cars, bikes, outboard engines etc, you normally hear only about the few with troubles, not the many that are exactly as expected when purchased. I am sure each brand has the same amount of success & failure stories as the next.

My head hurts haha... I
My head hurts haha... I don't want a etec as not interested in a 2banger regardless how quiet and smoke free they are. It's between suzuki and merc now as yamaha still use a timing belt. Thanks from your input guys. Looking at 12,800 fitted with the 4 inch digital readout for the merc and 13,900 for the suzuki with the digital readout to... also includes new side control for each.

If you do go with the Merc, the vessel view linked to my Simrads is pretty cool, they do a Merc screen too (rebadged Simrads I believe)

Midway marine rocko... I WON'T be paying that btw... and as usual mandurah outboards for mercury has been the most expensive! And that's with the standard gages! All quotes have been phone calls, when I make my mind up on what I want I'll be pushing for better prices...

Timing belt
dont be scarred of a timing belt with normal maintenance they are not an issue, stacks of cars have them with no issues. I have a f115b yammy with the square digital gauge, sensational motor, gets 1.4 nm to the litre at anywhere from 16 knots to 27 knots, fitted to an ocean whaler.
My spots are so secret even the fish don't know about them !
