Suggestions for fishing spots, North!

G'day guys. Myself and scottland have a booking on seasport this weekend, but with the current swell forecast at 5.5m, we are doubting if they will even go out.

Just looking for some suggestions for places to travel as an alternative - keeping landbased generally. hopefully North of J-Bay. Scott doesn't want to drive too far, being the lazy person he is haha. Ideally, i would like to go Quobba/exmouth, but that really isn't on the cards. How does Kalbarri fish on a high swell?

Hey Leemo, if you can get

Tue, 2012-07-31 14:47

Hey Leemo, if you can get hold of Tangles, he is the man to talk to. Generally the Chinamens will hold good tailor and mulloway with the bigger swell. Not too sure about the cliffs. Imagine it would be hard work. Fire a pm to him mate and I'm sure he will point you in the right direction.

Cheers

Pair of binoculars, spot anyone catchn fish and fish right next to them is the best bet, landbased pingin.

Hey, just got back from

Wed, 2012-08-01 18:37

Hey, just got back from kalbarri, we found it pretty difficult with the swell, and it wasn't even that big (compared to how big it can get, i think). Most of the shoreline is gradual reef/rock ledge thats a bit dangerous to walk to the edge because of waves crashing onto and washing over, and if u stand back a bit u gotta pull ur line back in over 5-10m of reef.

Chinamans aka the river mouth is a good looking spot but gets filled up pretty quickly in the morning and afternoon, we had a pretty lazy go there and got nada, no1 else seemed to be catching either but I overheard someone saying that lots of sharks are caught there at night.

The beaches (Red Bluff, Wittecara) had a pretty mean shorebreak, tho if u can cast past that (maybe 30-40 mtrs) you might do better than us. We are admittedly not very experienced and were using el cheapo heavy ass beach rod combos, we couldn't get baits out far enough. Thrashed some metals tho and also had no hits. It probably didnt help that high tide was around midday- early arvo while we were there, I think its early morning now tho.

Our saving grace was hiring a boat from Murchison boat hire, we managed to land a nice Mackie and lost plenty of others, but if the swells up u wont wana try getting out the passage anyway (cheers mick btw for the info earlier).

There's probably equal or better shorebased options between jurien and kalbarri

Surely he will go out?Swell

Thu, 2012-08-02 12:24

Surely he will go out?

Swell is down to 3.5m and the wind is pretty mild.

I'd be out on my boat up there this weekend if I could get away.

Fished very similar conditions a couple weeks back and it was fine on one day, hairy on the other when the northerly kicked in though.

When asked by a non-fisherman 'how many fishing rods do you really need?' the correct answer is either:

n+1 (where n is the number of fishing rods you currently own); or

n-1 (where n is the number of fishing rods which would cause your significant other to dump you.
