Sounder/plotter advice
Submitted by Outlaw II on Wed, 2011-08-10 11:49
Gday all looking at buying a sounder/plotter combo but am looking for advice as to whether or not i should buy two seperate untis instead.
Currently I am looking at either the huumminbird 798 ci with side scan ot the 858.
The other thing i want to know is what are peoples experiences with buying from US and where did you get it from. Ive come across a few sites that are about 4-500 dollars cheaper than in australia. This even includes shipping and local maps. The only downside is some of the units come in imperial units but for the money saved i can put up with that..
Cheers Michael

I bought a HDS(world
I bought a HDS(world background) from the states about a year ago, have had no problems at all, they don't deal in Humminbird though. Plus you can choose either imperial or metric on the HDS, would of thought Humminbird would be the same? Plenty of people will no doubt bring up the warranty issue so at the end of the day it is your own judgement call.

I have a 798ci and quite like
I have a 798ci and quite like it for the kind of fishing and diving I do. I've put up a few posts about it plus some example pictures. See if you can find them to get an idea of how it can work. Otherwise can answer specific questions too.
A lot of people will mention the advantages of two separate units, but I just have a tinny so a 585/620 as well wasnt going to fit easily. If you run them on separate frequencies you can have a few advantages (such as being able to scroll back on the chartplotter/combo to the exact mark and have it pop up in your gps, though some sounder units support that even if the other unit is just a chartplotter).
For the US, with humminbird, you can either get US or international units. International units can be changed to whatever units, US ones cant. I dont think humminbird use geofencing unlike lowrance. With a charplotter you'll probably want navionics (or maybe cmap) too btw. The base charts are rarely better than outlines (I think garmins are an exception?)
