Shimano Stradic 8000 for DHI trip

 Hi all

Going up to DHI at the start of May, in the process of buying a new rod and reel. I was looking at getting a Shimano Stradic 8000 loaded with 50lb braid and matching that witha 13' Daiwa sensor surf. Very much a novice when it comes to heavier gear so any feedback on this set up would be appreciated.

cheers

Chasing

What are you chasing? will you be spinning slices or soaking baits? i've just geared up for my quobba trip in march and there is so many options.

I would say predominantly tossing around poppers/slices and hopefully getting into some big tailor, macks, etc. I'm sure i'll be trying out baits on this set up as well though.

I know what you mean by options, started looking at penn spinfisher v, then daiwa saltist, now I'm onto the stradic. A number of good reels at that price point. I really just want something thats not gonna let me down if I hook something BIG.

 Hi mate,

cant comment on your overall set up but I can tell you that the guys at Bluewater Tackle Melville got me onto the Stradic's (5000 FJ from memory) and by far the best reel I've got! Smooth, tough as nails and yet light enough to do light fishing as well as the heavy stuff.

good luck

 I got a old 5k stradic it's pulled up numerous 30kg+ sambos

heaps of dhuys and even my 20kg dhuy in my display picture.

Recently just bought a 5k Stella for jigging and a 8000stradic for Bait fishing

The 8 feels perfect and has heaps of balls, pulling 30kg sambos from 80 meters without a worry

you don't have to worry about the reel stuffing up

But I still love the Stella more =p

Stradic

Hey Buzzer,

I had the Stradic FJ 8000 at the counter ready to pay, and the bloke at tackleworld convinced me not to, as the Daiwa Saltist 6500h would be much better for spinning slices / lures.(faster retreive)

I received the Saltist yesterday (Monday) took it out last night for a play and can't knock it, great reel - also fits my 12 & 13ft surf gear along with my 7.9" PE3-5 UPRO rod 60-120g

I will still be getting a Stradic once i get back from my trip (i like collecting)

at the end of the day it's what your comfortable with / what suits your needs.

I've got my stradic on a Daiwa Demon Blood PE2-4 running 40lb braid and is definitely a match made in heaven, but it's only a 6-7' rod and not a 13' like yours.

I could be wrong, but isn’t

I could be wrong, but isn’t the stradic 8000 and 10000 the same reel apart from the spool capacity? if so might be worth looking at the 10,000??

I've got the new stradic 6000 loaded with 30lb fins. Caught 6 sailfish up to 40kg in the space of 2 days with some very long/fast runs and it handled perfectly. Also been good on a couple amberjack on the jig. For the larger Sails I would have been more comfortable with the 8-10,000 purely for line capacity. So depends what you're going to be targeting.

If you get onto one of those big Spaniards, the 6000 might pull up short if using 50lb braid.

While I’ve got no doubt the Daiwas are good reels, I can’t stand the manual bail arms on the premium models, especially if you’re going to be throwing slices all day. That’s my take anyway.

and the stradic fj is a far smoother reel and nicer to use in my opinion, also the high speed gears in the saltist can make it a bitch to wind all day, (and yes i had a 4500 and 6500 but sold them soon after purchase). i predominately fish with stellas but own 3 stradic fj's  and i think they are the best value reel around.   cheers

That's what I was thinking, 9' would be the max for a casting rod I think.

I have a stella 5000 FJ and 8000 FJ. Also rate them highly! Think about braid as well, if you do a lot of casting, the cheaper braid often doesn't cut it. Tightly woven 8strand will get your lure out further than a rough and stiff 4strand. Daiwa hyper pe, YGK, .. all good. Try to stay away from spiderwire, power pro and tuf line. Thinner line with a good diameter/breaking strain ratio will also let you pack more yards on the spool. Also don't forget to put some nylon backing (about 20m is ok) on the spool first, to prevent your braid from slipping on the spool.

Good luck!

 Hi Stevie

is there another rod you could recommend that you think would be better in a similar price range? I'm a bit of a novice on bigger gear.

I have that rod with a stradic fi 8000 and 30 pound braid (320metres approx), throws a 80-100 gram lure a mile and is nice and light. Looked at saltist as well but too heavy in the 6500!
