Shark off three mile reef Perth
Submitted by steve434 on Mon, 2013-05-13 15:56
Hey, I was fishing the western side of the three mile reef out from ocean reef Perth today, I had what I believe to be a shark take the bait and cleanly slice through my 40 pound leader and on both hooks. Next time I head out I'll take the wire traces. I'm after everybody's opinion. Do you think it was a shark or could have it been something else? If it is shark, is it worth keeping for take afew fillets off?

High probability it coulda
High probability it coulda been a shark. Depends on what type of shark as to keeping/eating. Bronzies and Gummies are rated highly. Also there is a Maximum length of 700mm between dorsal fins (I think, someone else might be able to clarify) for whalers (which includes most sharks your likely to encounter [again, i think]). If you want to target sharks then yeh a wire trace isn't a bad idea.

My money would be on a nor' west blowie any day, had it happen many times.
Could be a shark too, but with the blowies you don't normally feel a thing, sharks usually feel a small tug first.

The smaller the icebox you take, the bigger the fish will be.

The smaller sharks are the best to keep 1m-1.5m and in my opinion Hammerheads are the best of the lot. They're piss easy to fillet cut your fillets off the cartellage then cut fillets off the skin, don't try to skin them you'll waste more than you keep. Tempura battered and sweet chilli sauce.

Andy ..how do you go about
Andy ..how do you go about bringing the bigger models on board .. is it just a matter of playing hop skip jump till the pacifier takes effect or whats this rope around the tail business i presume thats to drown them first .

We don't keep anything
We don't keep anything bigger that won't go in the landing net. Get them in and out comes the sledge handle ( nice piece of Hickory ;)

Sorry I did forget to mention on the original post, I had it on for about 30 seconds at a time on each hook and battled with it on the drag before it went

Could've been anything .. we
Could've been anything .. we usually get sharks to the boat as a bycatch no trace but using circles .. don't lock the drag up , they usually switch on big time when they see the boat .

Yep a shark for sure,
Yep a shark for sure, there's plenty of them around ATM. I've hooked 5 in the last couple of days around three mile. Landed 2 and lost 3 at the boat. If you specifically want to target sharks then yes use wire, otherwise stick with mono so you don't spook the fish your targeting. If you do land one then knock the fillets off it for sure, but as soon as you've dispatched it and got pics, remove the tail, fins, head and guts. There's also a 'bloodline' under the spine that needs to be removed, then straight onto ice. Shark freezes very well also and actually seems to improve after being frozen for a week or 2.

NW Blowies at 3 Mile?
Have people been getting them around 3 mile? I've been lucky so far around there. Bloody ugly stinky slimy things are the reason I stay away from the sound all together.
