Seasport charter casting lures for tuna???
I was going to send this an a PM to Whitety, but thought a few other FW punters who have fished Jurien could also be interested or tell me that I'm dreaming.
I was watching Shimano tv and came across this movie http://tv.shimano.co.jp/movie/tv/salt_dreamer_002/
It shows a fishing pro in Japan casting big and small top water minnows into schools of 30kg+ tuna. Then I got thinking that I've seen heaps of birds flying around tuna schools when I've been out with Whitey.
My question is, do you even get 10-30kg tuna off Jurien? If so, in large enough numbers to chase them around and be able to make a fun day out of it? Or are our tuna species too small?
I know you can troll around for macks and tuna, but I was thinking more of a 'find a school and cast lures on spinning gear' style of charter.

@7:40 set the hook much? I've
@7:40 set the hook much? I've done it with longtails in the 6-10kg range in the gulf at exmouth, dont know about jurien but if they are there and you can get close enough without them going deep cant see why not. Only problem i had was some days they were feeding on such small baitfish the only thing they would take was 10g metals, not so easy to cast...

They do get big yellowfin
They do get big yellowfin tuna in Jurien, you just have to be there, and thats the hard bit.
Most of those bird schools will be over smaller SBT and they take plastics, bucktails you name it! I like the jackson pintails, they cast really well!

Our tuna dont really get
Our tuna dont really get anywhere near 30kg+ with the exception of YFT's. The chance of finding a big school of YFT's at Jurien are pretty slim. The tuna schools you see and can cast to would most likely be stripeys or possibly SBT's (I dont know how far up they go, but you get them in Perth). In exy or the like you can get schools of longtails and mack tuna, but all those 4 species tend to be 3-8kg ish (with longtails perhaps up to double that). Although with warm currents you'd get longtails at Jurien, I doubt you'd get big schools.
Have heard of 20kg YFT schools at the abrolhos, but unlikely you'd run into them at Jurien with much regularity (i.e once in a few years event). As far as I know, bigger ones in our waters seem to hang around in smaller groups at best, so skirts or trolling lures would be the go. YFT's, and big ones do get caught at Jurien, but I dont know about targetting them with much regularity, let alone finding schools you can cast at. Ask Whitey how many YFT's he's caught?
Have cast at schools of YFT in abrolhos but up to 5-8kg max. One trip was mackies and YFT tuna though! Awesome!
Really though, if you want big (lets say 15kg+) tuna in schools you've got buckleys.
Species of tuna in our waters:
Southern Bluefin (max 10kg, commonly 3kg in schools, but occasionally 7-8kg schools)
Striped tuna (max 8kg, often 2-3kg or 6kg)
Mack tuna (max 10kg, wouldnt be in Jurien)
Big eye (max ??, but good luck finding them. I've only ever seen one)
Longtails (max 23kg, often 8-15kg, but unlikely in Jurien in big schools, and if so certainly not this time of year)
YFTs (max 90kg, WA's only big tuna, either 5-6kg ish (abrol) or 20kg(perth) seem most 'common').

there are quite a few big
there are quite a few big eye, but the smaller they are the harder it is to tell big eye and SBT apart. We (longliners) and AFMA had difficulty and disputes ID'ing while on the factory floor let alone in the water though the colours are more vivid when alive.
SBT up to 180+ move along off the coast between the Southern Ocean and Java Sea but the only place they seem to pass close to the coast is off Exmouth. We would regularly catch a pair of big ones outside Rankin Bank to the Cape.
Biggest BE-107kg for us, YF 90kg, sword 285 trunked, SBT 185 (but we would mostly release these as the quota was too expensive and risky).
Your right about the school tuna though-occasionally we would hit schools of small SBT/BE off jurien but to target would be very hit and miss.
Only area to really hit big schools of tuna are south coast for SBT and of Exmouth mid to late summer.

Don`t worry we get XXL tuna
Don`t worry we get XXL tuna in jurien for those of you in town next check at the photo in the Pub, as stated these are mainly Yellowfin and generally mid year April, May, June there is a few places where it is quite common to see them busting up the bait in late evenings early morning. As for casting lures to them i know whitey is regulary chucking jigs and stick baits at smaller sized fish with success, It would work on the bigger specimens though could prove frustrating. Far better method is to troll skirted lures at pace to find the fish once hooked up cast and retrieve stick bait/poppers while the other person is fighting the fish, this i have done and it works!!!!!

Schools of 20kg+ YFT?No doubt
Schools of 20kg+ YFT?
No doubt some XXL YFT are caught there, but if you devoted a fair bit of time to catching them would you likely catch one or more of a rare thing?
I did a dozen or so metro mack trips but didnt land one myself and they're a lot more common :p

Yeah mate at the right time
Yeah mate at the right time of year There`s certain spots out wide where the baitfish congregate you`d be surprised !!!!!!!
But the more people that think there`s not the better ;-)

I would say that the abrohlos
I would say that the abrohlos would be the safest bet. Last two times out we have been spooled on 8000 size gear using stickbaits. Sadly my rod for this is sitting up at Exmouth so been limited a bit by available gear. Trolling lures has turned up fish 30kg plus.
