Saragosa vs saltist
Submitted by Boyce on Wed, 2017-05-10 07:25
Hey guys
Looking at getting a new setup for lb mulloway
Gonna be runnin 40lb braid
Cant decide between 8000 saragosa or equivalent in a saltist
Already have a 25k saragosa, and love it, but thought id maybe try a daiwa
Any personal opinions or advice would be greatly appreciated
Cheers, sharkhunter1

yeah I'd suggest the gosa
yeah I'd suggest the gosa too. I gave my dad a saltist to use out of his tinnie and it's pretty much stuffed after 2 years. That's partly because he treats it like crap but I've seen gosa go thru worse.

40lb is more than enough for
40lb is more than enough for the beach, only reason you might need to step it up is if you plan on fishing the rocks a lot

If Gosa is a bit expensive,
If Gosa is a bit expensive, definitely look at the Spheros SW. The 8000 is $219 at angerlswarehouse at the moment.

other options
pfleuger salt has proven themselves for this sort of fishing and are cheaper, also fin nor make a big clunker spin reel cant remember the model name that is bullet proof
I have had saltists and they are ok but benefit from upgrades I performed like installing a proper line roller bearing setup and some thread locker (low strength) on a few screws that come lose along the way. Saragosa is probably a better option over the saltist head to head on quality. One advantage the saltist has is high retrieve ratio which is great for whipping your rig over a platform reef on retrieve
The saltist nero is a cheaper option than the black/blue model I assume your talking about and seems just as good

if you
are just using it for mulloway then i would look at the shimano thunnus range i got 350m of pe 3 braid on my 8000 which is plenty for any mulloway
but if your going to be beach fishing with it mostly then i wouldnt get either! i would spend the $100 and get a finnor leathal 100 great reels never break no matter how much sand and salt get it in it
but after all that in ansew to your question gosa or saltist .....gosa all the way
wont catch em sitting at home!

Saltist is the reason I no
Saltist is the reason I no longer buy daiwa. Garbage. Gosas are a massive step up. I prefer the previous model though.
Does anyone know where the love of god goes, when the waves turn the minutes to hours?

Didnt consider a baitrunner?
Didnt consider a baitrunner? Most of our mulloway fishing involves setting a line out in a rod holder. The baitrunners come into their own. We run thunnus, baitrunner ds and ultgras. The ultegra is a nice piece of kit and its long cast as well. Never had a problem with any of them yet. If not the saragosa is the pick of the 2. Most of the saltists are high speed anyway which u dont need off the beach. I personally am steering away from daiwa purely because of what im hearing from the service side of things. I service all my own gear anyway. But daiwa wont sell anything to do with magseal to the public so that pisses me off.

Thanks for all the advice
Thanks for all the advice guys,
also have a spheros 20k and is awesome,
probably looking now at either a gosa, spheros, finnor or thunnus.
Had a look at the baitrunner, but don't see the point of it, just another unnecessary feature to break,
Also, what type of rod should I match it with,
was looking at a aerowave graphite 13ft 5-10kg, is this too light

Ozflex SU-400
Ozflex SU-400 Nearly inderstructable the blanks are fiberglass but still fairly light. suit a larger spinner reel 10000+, or the penn prevail

On that rod I'd lean towards
On that rod I'd lean towards 10k or larger, 8k might be on the light side and leave the combo unbalanced

yeah
would be perfect if it was around the 10-12 ft but 14 is fine i had a 10-15kg 10ft prevail and had the drag on a saragosa 10k fully locked on a big sting ray and the rod held up quite well
