Hi guys
Heading north for a few weeks, anybody got any ideas for keeping sand flies from attacking. Also if you do get bitten any remedies to stop the itching
thanks

My wife got nailed in Broome
My wife got nailed in Broome after a king tide at the campsite near the marshland. She actually went to the clinic at the hospital as the itching was driving her insane and she was 90 covered from the waist down. They recommended hot water in the shower(as hot as you can bare) and surprisingly it gave many hours of relief... I also had some on my legs and must say it worked a charm.
As for prevention, we have since invested in desert dwellers now branded as natures botanical. It stinks likes vic's vapour rub but works like a charm even for kamikaze desert flies!

no idea if it works
But a client of mine told me to soak oats (breakfast cereal) in a cheese cloth bag (or t-shirt tied in a ball) in some cold water (about a pint) for an hour, squeeze out all the milky stuff :) and rub that all over your affected areas, never tried it but he was an old timer who swore by it each year he went up North.

Just cover up
as soon as the sun gets close to setting, long sleeves, long pants boots and socks( they love uncovered ankles) then you just need to keep spraying repellent on your hands neck and head. All you can do really if your night fishing in a creek, camp a decent distance away from the mud and mangroves.

skins
not sure if you've seen the footy players on TV wearing the skins but they are tight fitting lycra. When fishing at night I just chuck some underneath my clothes with socks on and you don't have to worry about sand flies getting under your clothes.

Prep up
just heaps of bushmans or any other product, just keep lots applied. nasty stuff but better than those little buggers. depends how you react really, i get done and they come up instantly and i itch for 10 mins and back to normal, fishing ppl ive been with dont know it until the next day then itch crazily for a week. Best is prevention!

IMO
after a few episodes in Kcity, the best prevention is cover up and Bushmens Orange.
If you get attacked by them the only thing I think that works for sure is Steroids from the Dr, 50mg daily for 3-4 days usually stops you scratching the shit out of yourself.
BUT prevention is the best.
Loose fitting clothes as recommended for mozzies don't work as the buggers just crawl under that and piss on you (they don't bite)

Sandy Flies
Agree with Adam, Bushmans is the best and the red lid 40% Deet Heavy Duty stuff is the better one for sure.
If bitten antihistamine and a cold beer haha
