Sambos in the Swan
Submitted by monstaf1sh on Thu, 2011-11-17 06:58
Launched out from Point Walter yesterday and found a bit of structure that to my surprise held a few 50cm+ Sambo's the sight of them got me prety excited and turned my attention of my Bream lures towards these little beasts but unfortunately I could not entice one to have a go at my lure although I did get the attention of 50 blowies.
I tried a fast retieve and fairly fast twitches also the slow roll but got no atention.
Anyone got any ideas on how to hook these sambos? Perhaps a bigger lure? faster retrieve?

Get some small twisties or
Get some small twisties or some of the small rivertosea metals and use them as jigs, an old WAFM had an article on it. They called it mini jigging, it does work.
People who haven't caught a big fish just don't get it

We used to do this for bream
We used to do this for bream back 5-6 years ago. 5g gold twisties were sick. Caught bream up to 48-49cm on them. They've gotten a bit wise to it at most of my local spots now days though. It would probably still work for rat sambos though.
Otherwise, 35-50mm metal vibes would work too I reckon.

also a good technique that
also a good technique that can be used on small trevally and queenies around structure up north, always got a good bite jigging twistys and the like. 20-30g models did the trick, i even get reff fish when i do it over reefs on the boat

Maybe try flicking a few sp's
Maybe try flicking a few sp's at them, its been working for the bigger sambos out deep when they are a bit shy.

you could try 4inch snapback
you could try 4inch snapback jerkbaits. id use a quick action with a few short sharp jerks, then allow it to sink back down to the bottom. blowies will still take the snapbacks though. but they will last probably 2-3x longer then normal placies.
otherwise try metal vibes/baby vibes as I mentioned above.

I bait cast half mulies with a smal splitshot with small gangs and retreive just a touch faster then the blowies can keep up with. Sambos will smash it. Otherwise cast out let it sink half way and retrieve slower

They are a marine species so
They are a marine species so they spawn offshore (ie behind rottnest where they aggregate in huge numbers at this time of year).
Most marine species that come into the river do so mainly in search of food/shelter.
