Rod for Rottnest - west end tailor

Hi guys

I am heading over to Rottnest in May for some shore based fishing. In the past when I was with the Surf Casters all of the guys (including me) used to fish West End of Rotto for Tailor with a 4m low mount and large spin reel. However, if most of the fishing is done wading on the reef, with not that much swell to contend with, do you think a 10 foot rod is more suitable with say 30lb braid?

The rod will be used for spinning with poppers, large slices and mulies (both weighted and unweighted) but nothing more than about 100g. Can you recommend a rod for around the $150 to $250 mark that might suit? I will work on the reel after the rod is sorted.

I have an older Starlo Stix 902 Shore spin but it is only really suited up to 70g so looking for something else.

Looking forward to hearing your thoughts.

Cheers

Brad

Daiwa seajigger

Daiwa Seajigger 305 would be my pick good for 100 grms and 20 pd line. The 325 goes higher casting and line class but IMHO you would not need more than this for just tailor. They are on special for $199 if you shop around, gutted because I paid $330 for mine. They cast like a dream, heaps of power and light as a feather.

My combo for this purpose is a FWA 9ft rod with a Stradic 4000 running 20 pd braid its cast weight is 70 grams but I cast 3 ounce richters about 80-100 metres with it. I've pulled salmon to 7 kilos and tailor to about 4 kilos without a worry. Hope this helps

30lb braid i would be afraid

30lb braid i would be afraid to cast over 50gram lures constantly, imho if your fishing on the reef itself then i doubt you would need anything over 9ft, plenty of ppl use 7ft and do fine since most fish are close in.

Thanks for the responses. Any more suggestions?

How would the Shimano Tirilejo suit? I realise they are out of production.

Ive got a Stradic 5000 to mount on it. Do you reckon you loose much in the way of casting distance by moving from 20lb to 30lb? Just being careful because we do occasionally get YTK's off the rocks.

Has anyone tried the NS Black Hole rods for this style of fishing?
