depends on the trailer set up

drive on is the way to go if the trailer set up is made for the boat, obviously in some places you cant drive on so your left with the winch.

Do what your comfortable with

drive on is great if you have had the boat for a while and are confident in the way it sits on the trailer etc.

if the boat and trailer are fairly new to you, winch in would be the best method to start with. You only need to get is seriously wrong with a drive on once, and you are up for big $ repairs.

Winch

Tue, 2017-06-13 09:48

I get the trailer as deep as possible to make sure the boat lines up nicely or can be repositioned and then winch the last 6 or 8 feet. I'm solo most of the time so having a line from the front and rear cleat means I can push the boat out from the dock and get the boat heading towards the trailer and can change it's angle as required. There are some good videos on youtube for launch/retrieve solo and most of them are much bigger trailer boats in the US.

I will at some point add side guides to the rear of the trailer to make things a little bit easier.

I drive on most of the time

Tue, 2017-06-13 10:24

I drive on most of the time now. Have a boat catch setup now so that helps. If you drive on you need to make sure your trailer is setup for it!

I had a superwinch which was ok but very slow and a little underpowered for my 3t+ boat but would be great for a smaller boat with small current draw. Looking at a starter motor winch or a high speed 4wd winch for the ramps i cant drive on now!

I bought a reef runner and it

Tue, 2017-06-13 19:06

I bought a reef runner and it came with a normal hand winch aswell as a starter motor winch.

Simple set up. Mine has a big pulley so fairly rips the boat up, as the bloke I bought it off did alot of beach launching. Its wired up to a hand sized piece of pipe with a push button.

I,d recommend it if you have a strong winch post. Mine doesnt fill me with confidence so only use it if I feel the need

I drive on most of the time, but winching on is relatively easy.. just get a plan and master it.. if I'm by myself (don't have boat catch).. I get the trailer really close to the finger jetty with rope already unwound (Do that when you park the car after launching).. pull the boat up to the entry of trailer and quickly head down to clip it on. If it's calm you could have the trailer deep and float it on.. but if your worried about the boat going sideways - start the trailer pretty dry (60-70% tyre wet).. winch it up a metre or 2.. then back the car down another metre to finish off. I've got carpeted bunks which help to walk on

Only problem with drive on

Tue, 2017-06-13 19:41

When the skipper is caught in the moment and all the other boats at the jetty are getting knocked around by the turbulence, generally when the boat is nearly at the post and needs an extra squirt to get there. I launch my Reefy solo often and winch 100%. Helps to have a good trailer set up. I have no issue with drive on but be courteous if others have boats at the jetty.

Fly wheel and starter motor

Tue, 2017-06-13 19:53

From go to whoa in 17 seconds, I don't know how to post up photos unfortunately or I would. Basically it is just a fly wheel welded to the main shaft of your winch and use the same starter motor that the fly wheel was mated to. The winch becomes disengaged from the starter motor when the power is of via the solenoid, so the big thing is to remember to have the anti reverse ratchet engaged.

I have an L&R Boat Latch and love it for driving on. Only problem for me is I predominantly go to Hillarys which has a kerb on the hardstand and tiny jetties and am usually over 1m away from the jetty and still have to climb down to the wheel well and get wet.

21 " Glass boat

I go solo reasonably often with it. Depends what sort of trailer you've got. Mine has bunks. So when going to get the car I pull about 3/4 feet off the winch. I back the trailer down until there is about 2 foot of bunk showing above the water and drive it up until it stops, no more speed, just in gear to stop it going anywhere. Mine is a walk around,so I jump off the bow hook up the winch and pull it tight. Then jump back up turn the motor off and trim it up, then winch up the last couple of metres

Driving On!!

Wed, 2017-06-14 13:24

Driving on is the easy option but over time with every bloke doing it can damage the ramp. It chews the sand out from the end of the ramp and then from under the ramp causing collapses or big steps at the end of the ramp. For a bit of extra effort I always winch the boat out.
