Regalvanizing trailer

Ive got a 12 year old i beam trailer under a 6m boat that is getting a bit rusty.I am considering pulling it apart and getting it blasted and regalved.

Has anyone here gone through the exercise and if so what did it cost and is there any advice you could give me ?

Thanks

not done a trailer but have made up and gal'ed a few parts.
Speak to the galvanising mob or jump on their page, plenty of info.

Your Ibeam trailer will be alot easier to do than a box one.

Cost would be higher if

Cost would be higher if needing sand blasting. If theres no paint on trailer and bad rust they can usually just acid dip it them regalv. Cost is per kilo . Not upto date on the current rate.

Hartways naval base is your best bet. Big bath

Being lbeam it should just be surface rust.

Im redoing mine in the next year. Will put on work account.

Measure and record all roller brackets mounting spots.for replacement when complete. Then thete shouldn't be any need for adjustment.

ive had a few thinks done at hartways canning vale I got to winch posts, 12 spring hangers, 2 winch holders and some brackets it came to $80 for paint removal and galvanizing a trailer would come in around $700 I would think all you would have to do is drill all the holes 1mm bigger and turnaround would be under a week

re-galv can be expensive

as a previous poster said, and there had better not be any deep rust. It may not  be apparent until after the job has been blasted, (which you have to pay for)and the parent metal may be thin. If you do any welding repairs, be sure to have EVERY spot of slag ground off it or out of the weld--the gal just doesn't stick. I spoilt a brand new trailer I built a few years back by not being meticulous with that. Very time poor, lot of welding in 40 deg plus heat middle of summer up here, rushed the cleanup. Finished job was as strong as you could wish for, but i had to cold gal some welds, disappointed.

What where you welding with

What where you welding with that the galv didnt stick to. Flux core, stick ? If it was either yeah slag can be a problem if not cleaned. No problem with solid though.

Some places do a better job than others also. We have switched to hartways after our local mob clised down and quality is certaintly better.

Even mig can be a problem,

Even mig can be a problem, the over glassy deposits need to be cleaned off or the zinc won't adhere properly. Anything of mine that I want a good job done I wizz over with a flap disc or wire buff. As Ranmar said deep rust is a real issue as the acid won't remove it.

Welding with GP rods. The clean welds were fine, just the ones with some slag in them. Not the worlds prettiest welder, but it'll never break mind you, the ones i completely forgot to chip off in my hurry to get it on the freight didn't help, either
