Reading the beach
Submitted by Jossy777 on Sun, 2009-02-01 18:22
Hi all,
Do a bit of beach fishing but have no real idea on how to "read the beach" for holes or good places to put the line in. If anyone has any advice on things to look out for would be much appreciated.... cheers

look for "gutters"
generally they run parallel to the beach, but really they can run in any direction. Generally the water will be a darker colour as it is deeper and you may find waves etc wont actually break over a gutter, or they break very gently (hope that makes sense?!?)
If you can get a vantage point up higher like a cliff or sand dune etc, often it is easier to spot these gutters than at beach level.

Gutters are good channels
Gutters are good channels are better, look for a gap in a break or even better buy a copy of Fishing the Wild West by Ross Cusack (Legend)

Look for channels of water that are heading out to sea
where the water looks a little sandier than the water around it. This will generally be a rip. The gutters will generally feed into a rip and they are a good place to lob your bait. As Daisy and Huggy said, the water in the gutters is usually darker than the water on the sand banks.
Another good thing to look for is when you see a wave coming towards the beach and it suddenly losed momentum, that is generally because it has come across a gutter.
The idea is to cast your line beyond the gutter if possible and then slowly wind it back and across it.
On a high tide, you will quite often have gutters within 20 metres of the beach. On a low tide you might have to really heave it out there to reach a gutter.

UV Glases Help Heaps
Try UV sunnies. They help heaps to locate darker patches as all the knowledgeable guys above have described already. It pays to do homework before conditions change. And BTW, if the hole looks good and it's not high tide, you can bet that it will be better when the tide does come in.
