Port Gregory Flathead

Hey All
I am lucky enough to be heading up to Port Gregory in March for a fish and unwind. I have heard you can get flatties on plastics north of the jetty.
Now all I need to know is what type of plastics flatties take and get a bit of technique going.....cast and slow wind?

yeah I heard that you can get some good size taylor and mulloway on the south side where the reef meets the beach, I will surely chuck a line in down there.

if u can get a dingy and go
if u can get a dingy and go about 500m out to the inside of the reef (which u can see form the jetty) and have a flick around there, u may get coral trout, dhuies, pinkies , sharks well worth it if u ask me, just watch the beach launch their the sand is very soft,

yep mate plenty of platties
yep mate plenty of platties in there!!
any smallish plastics will catch them, small white snapbacks, or nitro chicken colours.
May need to wade out onto the flats a bit (i was in waste deep most of the time)
Its probably 500m up from the jetty or so.
Can get a few choppers and some decent tailor too off the jetty at night. South of the jetty where the reef meets the sand (just past) nice hole there for mullas and tailor, however that beach is SOFT!)
Make sure you have let your tyres down and have recovery gear.
We got a Pajero up and down that beach, but we did have to leave it up there for a few hours as the tide was too high to come back. (this was in mach last year)

Port Gregory
Most of the Flaties in the bay are very small, you will find Yellow fin Whiting in the bay. As already said fish south of the reef and you will have an excellent time on Mulla, Sharks and tailor. If you get easterly winds send out a floating bait the macks will be everwhere.
Head further south on the beach to the mouth of Hutt River and you will find the Mulla fishing outstanding.
Will catch Dart and small Threadfin salmon in the waves during the day, they are excellent fun on light gear.
North of the jetty up around the corner is shallow but worth a fish if your after Whiting.
Big Samson hang around the exit out to sea through the reef as well as Sharks.
So many options around the area, goodluck

Still good fun getting the little fellas on light gear
Be prepared to lose a few plastics to the NW blowies tho! plenty there!

Thanks All
I have a nissan pathfinder and max trax so will explore a little north and south, and I think you can hire a tinny at the caravan park up there so Andy I will definitely get out near the reef and see if I can get my first WA dhuie. The hole south of the reef also sounds like fun, as do the flatties, thanks Bodie.
Like you say KF...so many options up there, I am going to spend 5 days so it seems like I will have 5 different ways to fish :)

work of advice... I dont
work of advice...
I dont normally get stuck into caravan parks, however we were up there march last year, and the old guy running the park is a real nob! and will do anything to get a free carton of beer from you. The lady who runs the shop is ok, just the old bloke up there isnt.
Heading north along the beach is pretty good, not too soft until you get up round the corner.
If you hire a tinny launch and head north to the first exit passage in the reef. Anchor just on the inside on the jetty side of the passage. Get plenty of baldies and trout there (most are undersize) but do get some baldies which are legal!
Some big sambos cruising around there too, got smoked a few times on the light gear trying to land one!

Good luck Rickus
And please report back. Hopefully the weather will be kind to you. If it is I am sure it will go off. It's great country up there.

Rickus, we were using squid
Rickus, we were using squid and mulies.
The sambos would follow unweighted mulies retrieved in slowly.
there is some awesome offshore fishing the be had there, if you can either 1. get good weather or 2. put up with the shit weather! Whilst we were there is blew 20-25knot southerlies most days, or had a howling easterly in the morning.
We ended up putting up with it. One and only time you will see blokes wearing full rain gear in 40 degree weather. It was rough as guts and we only went 8 or 9 mile!
However bagging out on trout, baldies, pinkies and dhu's in 30 minutes is always fun :)

Thanks Guys
I have been spending March each year up at Port Denison for the last 5 years so I am no stranger to a bit of wind.
First year I went up I got blown out by a 40 knot souwester for the first three days, in the end I just had to get a line in.....first mulie I threw out came back and hit me in the head. But like they say a bad days fishing is still a good day.
I will definitely report back and hopefully have some awesome pics to post.

We went up there about 18
We went up there about 18 months ago and 6 of us fished for a week in the bay, north, south and at the mouth and did not get one fish. However the weather was terrible and the hole to the south was a washing machine, i can imagine that in calm weather it would be an awesome hole to fish!! If you can time your run you can walk out onto reef wall and fish either side of it in calm weather this would be great fishing. we ended up giving up on the fishing and were snorkelling out to the reef where we got 6 massive occies. The fish out on reef are big and plentiful!! Didnt see one fish in the bay though when we were snorkelling back in. caravan park was good but yes the man was a NOB he caught a snake and brought around and into our tent where my 3 young girls were ( great way to scare the shit out of the kids!!!!)
have fun and hope the fishing was better than when we were there.
