pissed off seals?

i was diving once again today and dove down to chase a fish and noticed out of the corner of my eye and it turned out to be quite a large seal staring at me and looking at my spear and flippers and what not as to say "what the fuck are you doing?" so i slowly waded backward to a rock and sat on it once i was up he popped his head up and just looked at me for a sec and i whacked the water with my spear and told him to piss off so he did, i know i probably shouldnt have but i really dont know what their like with people, it would be great if they were harmless cos their great creatures but then again i could have annoyed him by whacking my spear on the surface, just looking for some input.

Have been swimming with seals
Have been swimming with seals since I was a kid and now do it with my kids. Very inquisitive and curious, never had one be agressive. It is a different story when they are on land though.

I have been freaked out a
I have been freaked out a number of times by seals sticking their head right up next to mine while diving. I think they are just inquisitive. I have one that would not leave us alone one day, it just kept hanging around, then coming right in having a sniff, even had a chew of my fin. I had to get a bit forcefull with the but of my speargun to give him the message.
They are great to watch underwater, but you can't trust them. I've heard they have a nasty bite and have been known to have a chew on divers before

I've only ever found them to
I've only ever found them to be inquisitive and playful. just like any wild animal dont touch them and if you interact with them give them space to do what they want and they'll be right. They'll usually play and mimic you if you do some tricks.
They have been known to attack people though, like most animals you wouldn't go up to a dog you don't know and pat his head or get it in a corner.
If you've ever seen them get excited and bolt at full speed you wouldn't ever won't one to charge you, wouldn't stand a chance in hell.
Pretty sure all the perth colonies are male seals and the girls all live north of lancelin, the big boys all go north around this time of year and if up that area stay away, they get very aggresive and territorial around the girls.
A few years ago up lancelin a 14 year old girl was almost killled by one. she was up water skiing behind the boat when a large bull got airborne and took her down by her neck, scary stuff!

Be very careful.
Wrong time and place for them can turn out real ugly. Picked up surfers on three occasions from the islands around cervantes that had been harassed and biten.
My sister was with a group once that was attacked as they attempted to walk onto an island. One of the ladies had a baby child was attacked by a group of seals that tore the heck out of her and eventually scalped her.
Ive got nothing against seals, just i think its wise to not approach them or the area they are staying.

seals are no different to
seals are no different to big wild cats like leopards or lions or cougars.
They come from the same background family millions of years ago and if you have seen a leopard seal hunt, then you will know those teeth are deadly.
Never had one being agressive in the water, only bity on land, but I'd never trust one fully!

Yeah I certainly wouldnt go
Yeah I certainly wouldnt go and touch one of the buggers, be good to have a dive with them though, never had them come up.
When asked by a non-fisherman 'how many fishing rods do you really need?' the correct answer is either:
n+1 (where n is the number of fishing rods you currently own); or
n-1 (where n is the number of fishing rods which would cause your significant other to dump you.

Had one fully charge us at Carnac
Many years ago we stopped at Carnac after a dive and decided to just have some fun snokelling. Had a big bull charge towards us, and I can tell you he wasnt happy. Was only about 5m from the boat and we had a very hasty retreat onto the Marlin board.
He wasnt a happy chappy, but we did notice some smaller females around, perhaps he thought we were another seal and got pissed.

Seen the ones
at Carnac or the Sound squiding, have had them come to the boat, begging, but we don't feel seals, pelicans or dolphines. Have been told they have the bite of a dog, or their mouth is like a dog for biting.

Google 'Mrunderh2o' and
Google 'Mrunderh2o' and select 'Diving with Lions'....(sorry don't have link at work). This is my video taken near Jurien. The females and pups are located on the islands around Jurien/Cercantes etc. The Bachelor pad is located at the Perth islands. Come breeding season the boys travel north.
My only concern is when a male is seen with the females at the northern islands. He is there to breed and will protect his girls.
The females and especially the pups are very inquistive and playful...the males are very playful but a little more assestive in their moves.
Cheers Pete
