Phone a pollie day

From Ifish Facebook page, re a national phone campaign tomorrow on marine parks and the Margiris.

"Many of you have been asking what you can do to show your support AGAINST the Marine Parks issue & the Super Trawler. Tomorrow I will be making a call to my local Politician along with 1000's of other passionate fishos for "Phone a Pollie - Tuesday August 21st"

They want people to call in and say "don't lock us out" and also stop the super trawler.

WA pollies that should be rung:

Melissa Parkes (02) 6277 2189, member for Freo

Gary Grey (02) 6277 7600, Member for Brand

Suggested comment: "Hello I would look to pass a message on to the member for XXXX

"Please tell Tony Burke not to lock me and Australia's five million recreational anglers out of marine parks and stop the super trawler. We just want to go and catch a fish."

Some Advice

Tue, 2012-08-21 05:16

1. You can call a Federal Member and they will listen to your issues, but it will carry more weight and be dealt with more efficiently if you call the federal member from your electorate (The member for the actual area you live in). The website below has a list of the electorate buttons at the top and will take you to the member for that area, and their contact details.  http://www.mypolitician.com.au/electorates/western-australia/

2. If you dont know the name of your electorate the link below has another list, scroll all the way to the bottom and you can click on the various electorates from WA and under each one it will show a listing of the suburbs in that electorate.

http://www.aec.gov.au/profiles/

3. If you call, email or write a letter include your Name, Phone Number and address.  This is so that the enquiry can be officially logged into the database system as a constituent of their electorate.  If you are unwilling to leave your details, virtually nothing will happen, if you leave your contact details, they are obligated to make a response, even if it is just acknowledging they have received your comment/enquiry.

4. Be courteous to the staff you speak to, they are just doing their job and they will have a protocol for taking enquiries like the above contact information.

5. Have a clear, valid point.  Don't rant or ramble, if you dont know what your point is, I would suggest using the template comment posted by Scott above.

6. You can contact your state member, but if you start talking about a federal issue, they will be unable to help and should direct you to the federal member responsible.

Private Members Bill.

Fri, 2012-08-31 08:27

Mellisa Parkes the member for Freo.has made a media release that says she intends to present a Private Members Bill into Federal Government banning super trawlers operating in Australian waters. Haven't seen the wording of the bill and you can imagine the legalities of what constitutes a super trawler but I'm sure the legal eagles of which she is one would hopefully get it sorted out without grey areas that can be exploited by over zealous foreign fishing operators. Mellisa claims to have the support of other members of Parliament for the ban.Lets see if the Federal Government can get this right.

Melissa Parke is also driving the push for angler lockouts.

I wouldn't be too quick to embrace her agendas....
