PG vs High gear spinning reels

I've been thinking about picking up a Saltiga for bottom bashing and demersal jigging whilst runout sales are on, keen to hear peoples thoughts on the high speed vs power gear models for this application. The high speed models feel tighter due to more gears meshing but some ppl reckon the high speed is better for jigging because you move the jig further per crank?

PG

Go a PG for bottom bashing and demersal jigging.
For demersal's you want to slow your retrieve rate down whilst jigging.
Also lifting sinkers off the bottom is a whole lot easier with a lower gear ratio.

I try to ignore gear ratios

I try to ignore gear ratios for jigging. Look at retrieve per crank. I know with my height/action around 90cm per crank is good for me, which is usually the low gear model.

I had a Stella 8000 PG and a Stella 10000.....identical reels except for the gear ratio.

I use the 8000PG all the time for heavy jigging and bottom bashing.

The Stella 10000 high gear was great for popping......but nothing else. Horrible to jig with and hopeless for bottom bashing.

Unless your are popping or spinning lures, go PG.

Hi vs Low

Had the salty 4000 low for my jigger, now have the hi gear model, heaps happier!

Found the retrieve rate

Sun, 2015-02-08 21:15

Found the retrieve rate suited my action and the rod length (62s) more bettera. And the lesser free spinning hi gear model feels smoother when in action too. I fish placcys prob more than jigs for demersals atm anyhow and the combo does get used for some trollin, so the faster reel will help if you have a speedy pelagic changin directions I guess. You hear the ideal retrieve rate for jiggin is around a meter anyhow so its bang on. Plenty of oh jiggin outfits gettn round that have high ratio reels like the Ryoga. Besides, if you are fishin deep the retrieve rate will be less due to the smaller diameter of the spool when a third of the line is off it if ya wana get techincal haha
